Let people buy gift cards via the usual checkout process.
Customers shouldn't have to jump through hoops to buy a gift card. Let customers use the familiar cart-to-checkout process instead of requiring a separate purchase process for gift cards.

BestBuy.com and Target.com do it the right way; They allow customers to place a gift card inside a shopping cart alongside other items.

On the other hand, BN.com says, "...gift cards and certificates must be purchased separately from each other and from other items." That means customers have to place separate orders if they want a gift card and a different item. Who wants to deal with that extra hassle?
