Fly on the Wall: The week in photos Matt 28 Jul 2006

Campfire lets you upload images that show up inline during a chat. We use this feature all the time. Here’s the week in photos at our Campfire room…

Our new motto: WWBRD?

A storm bird flew over Chicago. Note the legend: White means it’s nice. (Or godawful.)

This logo just LOOKS complex:

This is so true…

There are amazing pictures of Yellowstone and Glacier National Park and the Tetons over on James Duncan Davidson’s flickr stream.

The generally positive response to the Bezos announcement made us feel like we were here…

…Because we were expecting a reaction more like this:

Someone on that thread referred to us as a web ship. That led to this proposed work outfit:

The new Yahoo is overly gonzo on dynamic content boxes, like this block:

David in ten years?

We cleaned up the Backpack primer. Less green and more active verbs in headlines. Old:

New:

While Jason has his small thing, Ryan has an 8-incher. Chef’s knife that is. It’s from Global and it’s handle is filled with sand.

Sam was stoked to be done dealing with display issues IE.

Marcel described Sam’s IE dealings as “a real walk on the dark side…glad you are emerging victorious…TAKE THAT”

Token checking had Sam imagining a little calendar fairy touching each account on the head with a magic wand.

“Done!”

When Marcel breaks for lunch, he barrels over to the kitchen.

Jason wrote, “There’s nothing better than blood orange juice. And if you squeeze in a little lime you’re dancing at the feet of your lord.” Mmmm…blood.

Much too cute:

We admired the simple communication style of the good ‘ol days (TM) as seen in this snip from a vid linked by Coudal:

This is what Jason will look by the time Movable Type finishes updating his latest blog post:

Old jokes ensued.

Jamis hearts ferrets.

We all heart Don Schenck:

The launch of the calendar brought huzzahs and ticker tape.

The cal also meant it’s time to update the Backpackit.com home page. I argued for a before/after sequence. Before Backpack:

After Backpack:

That idea was shot down.

This is pure noise.

That was awesome. My favorite is the picture of the ferrets.

Jamie 28 Jul 06

Matt, does Jeff Bezos ever hang out in the Campfire chat room? That would be awesome if he did!

SH 28 Jul 06

I vote for more fairies, Global knives and baby turtles in every SvN post.

ML 28 Jul 06

Matt, does Jeff Bezos ever hang out in the Campfire chat room?

Actually, Jeff uploaded the cute turtle picture! Just kidding. No Bezos sightings in the CF chat room yet.

witness 28 Jul 06

Jeff took that picture before swallowing that baby turtle whole. On a dare!

siftee 28 Jul 06

they pay u to post this crap??

shane 28 Jul 06

@ Anon & siftee, you guys are heartless with no sense of humor. That was classic!

@ 37s, It’d be great to see you guys try only communicating through photos for a day…

The Colonel 28 Jul 06

Clever post!

Is it just me, or does this whole Bezos thing have you folks in a bit of a giddy mood?

Or perhaps it’s just the blood orange juice that’s doing it.

Chris 28 Jul 06

Wow, if this is noise then my blog is 100% noise! I just love this post.

Mike G 28 Jul 06

Its all about the happy little trees.

marissa 28 Jul 06

i want a ferret!

Mrad 28 Jul 06

*heavily sarcastic tone* No, no, no, no. All you guys should EVER talk about are your views on software development, getting real and product launches. A fun post? Yyyyyeah pure noise.

Seriously though, who the hell could have a problem with a post that starts off with THE Bob Ross?! Keep the fun coming guys. Just about everyone with any sense of humor appreciates it.

Five years of trying to say something meaningful, and I get props when I misspell my own name.

Just my luck.

*sigh*

At least I don’t drive an Audi!

fadding_value 29 Jul 06

what does ‘overly gonzo’ mean?

Suthers 29 Jul 06

@witness — I am now imaging Jeff Bezos in a new Chuck Norris fashion…

Find your own jokes.

andrew 29 Jul 06

So can we infer that Bezos is like any other Venture Capitalist (VC) … they give you money and don’t give any promised “advise” because they don’t have any advise to give, all they want is a return on their investment.

Sounds like to me, what happened was 37signals just sold off a small part of their business and nothing more.

Mathew Patterson 30 Jul 06

Sounds to me like a big leap to take from “no sightings in the CF chat room” to “Bezos is like any other Venture Capitalist (VC) they give you money and dont give any promised advise because they dont have any advise to give”

You don’t think you might be judging a bit prematurely Henry?

Henry 31 Jul 06

@Mathew

Don’t you find it somewhat strange that some who has JUST investmented money in a firm and that firm (37signals) accepted the money because they are expecting to gain insight from that person has not once communicated with the group?

To me it would seem that if I was just to put money down on something, I would be involved with it. It sounds moreso that he is there solely as an investor and not a “team player” … like many VC are.

Henry 31 Jul 06

Let me clarify my previous comment.

The idea is that once someone invests in a company is when that persons interest in the firm is the highest (because if that persons interest wasn’t high, they wouldn’t invest).

Being that since Bezos has not communicated to the 37signals group, while in his highest interest in the firm (since he just invested) would indicate … to me at least, that he is much like a typical VC.

Now this is not bad, just unfornuate since it seemed that 37signals was hoping to gain insight from him.

I belive many people, including myself, are curious to see how accepting VC/angel money would turn out for 37signals … and if there would be any “lessons learned” from this deal.

Good luck 37signals and keep us informed if you would

How do you know that Henry? Do you have some inside knowledge, or is it all based on the throwaway line of “no sightings in the CF chat room?

Shrikant Joshi 31 Jul 06

Mmmmm, Nice…

I like the new Backpack Primer. It’s the only case, as far as I can remember where four colors actually merged nicely with each other. Reminds me how much a few tweaks can radically change the look of things…

My copmpany keeps insisiting on a two color design (three if you include ‘white’ spaces). And no, they won’t listen to me.

*sigh*

Regards,
Shrikant.

Kevo 31 Jul 06

Amusing. But let’s hope this doesn’t turn into B3ta…

Matt T. 31 Jul 06

What everyone is neglecting to ask is: where can one get that awesome Scrooge McDuck figurine?

Don Schenck 31 Jul 06

Hey Bezos … call me. :-)

Will Rogers 31 Jul 06

Great post. That’s a classic fortune cookie.

what does overly gonzo mean?

It means “overly enthusiastic,” roughly. As in they’re way too excited about those content boxes and use them to death.
