thanks for getting rid of those black pages. sure looked great, but was wasteful on toner.

the font is somewhat smallish. so if you print two pages per A4 (letter) sheet, its sort of hard (certainly not comfortable) to read. twice more pages = twice more dead trees.

but this is going to help someone else, me, forgive me mother nature i’m printing now ;)

Yeah, mailing a (new/old) download link to the existing customers when a new version comes out would be the Right Thing To Do in something like this — it’s what all the established PDF book sellers do. You should not need to poll a blog (and save old downloading instructions) in order to get an up-to-date copy.

And yes, it’s a nice book. Compact, and solid advice. Just remember that the target audience here is people who are designing “normal” webapps. If you’re doing something else, or doing mission-critical stuff, some of these guidelines might be flat-out wrong for you. But as always, choose the right tool for the job, and books & design principles are tools.

The book’s content is great but it would help - for screen reading - if you got InDesign to set up page links and/or intenal bookmarks (I’ve emailed a more detailed explanation of what this means).

If you do take up Petri’s suggestion to allow fresh d/l of revised ‘editions’ then do consider some additional mark-up to show what’s new/altered. Failure to do this is the usability let-down of the PDF publishing model. Easy for the publisher to crank out a rev, hard for the user to find what’s changed.

…like the book though!

I agree with a number of the comments above regarding how you’re handling revs to the book - it’s rather un-37 of you. Preparing a PDF-only book without a set of basic bookmarks to navigate through the book is surprising to me. It’s so easy to do in InDesign or Word before you generate the PDF. It’s less easy but no big deal to do it in Acrobat after the fact.

I bought the site license - happily. Great that you offered a “good karma” option. My boss had asked me to purchase 3 copies and was impressed when I told him you had provided a better option. Kudos on that.

The update/notification/link issue is another problem area that seems to break with your overall philosophy. I grabbed your update because I’m still in the 72 hour window. But if you make some additional refinements over the weekend, I’m out? That’s plain silly. I encourage you to follow the example set by most successful PDF publishers and figure out a way to: 1) notify all past purchasers how and where they can get an updated version and; 2) make the changes easy to find.

Maybe those complainers should read the book. “It’s not a problem until it’s a problem.” Why are you complaining about the 72 hour window when 72 hours hasn’t even passed yet? Why do you worry about problems you don’t even have yet? Just click the damn URL and download the new version, don’t worry about a problem that isn’t there yet.

Amazing. People’s lives must be filled with grief and suffering because of all this worry. Don’t worry about things you don’t need to worry about.

Based on the posted comments I decided to check out the sample chapters for Getting Real.

I randomly started off with Meetings are Toxic. Within the first few paragraphs the author says “discuss it quickly via email or IM or Campfire”. It isn’t that big of a deal but it seemed tacky to plug Campfire. The author goes on to say “they often contain one moron…”. True or not that struck me as unprofessional. I also noticed several grammatical errors (which in all fairness I understand have been cleaned up in the latest revision of the book).

I could continue to nitpick about the remaining sample chapters but overall here is what I think.

The information wasn’t horrible but I had a hard time taking it seriously. It came across as sloppy and trite. For anyone that is serious about “Getting Real” in terms of development I would recommend sticking to the classics:
Peopleware by DeMarco
Debugging the Development Process by Macguire
Software Project Survival Guide by McConnell
The Inmates are Running the Asylum by Cooper
The Design of Everyday Things by Norman
The Mythical Man-Month by Brooks
After the Gold Rush by McConnell

I would even go so far as to recommend Defensive Design for the Web by 37signals but based on the sample chapters I just can’t imagine anything in this particular “book” that would help me improve my web development skills.

Why wasn’t there an email sent out telling folks about the updated version of the book?

It was just a coincident that I happened to be reading the Loud Thinking blog and noticed the update that mentioned there was a reprint. On a whim, I followed the link and only when I scrolled to the top did I see that the new version “fixes a few spelling errors and makes the PDF less of a toner hog by converting the black chapter pages to white.”

I like the book, but it doesn’t seem right that the link to download is only active for 72 hours, especially if there will be follow up versions with fixes to the book…

In any case, you’ve read the samples and didn’t like the book. That’s ok. Perhaps these guys aren’t professionals and that’s ok too. They just get things done and wanted to share with us their secrets of success.
Even if their style can sound sloppy and trite to you there’s lots of precious gems there.

For cripes sakes, the book is only $19! How many print books can you go back to the publisher when a new version is released and say “Hey, I want another copy since mine contained errors.”

Granted, this is slightly different since the book is a PDF and it’s virtually free to deliver an updated version; however, give the guys a break. This is their first foray into self-publishing a book, so I expect a few things to change over time.

Sure, it’s be great if I was notified by e-mail when a new release was made available and that I’d get free updates for life. However, I’ll reiterate, the book was only $19, and was WORTH EVERY PENNY, regardless of whether I ever get another update.

All I did was make a few suggestions. Sheesh.

Here’s another suggestion for the 37Signals team - set up an RSS feed to provide alerts when an update is available, either in the form of a refreshed PDF od online supplemental content. No e-mail worries that way.

Take a pill dude. Contribute something meaningful. Better yet, how about you actually read the book and try to warp your brain around the idea of establishing a positive feedback loop with early adopters?

I read the book last night and found a lot of great insight and ideas in there. It got me pretty excited and I’m planning on implementing some of the methods described in there as early as next week when I head to the big city on business.

It’s also inspired me to get off my ass and finally start a web service - something I’ve been planning for far too long.

Good stuff! What I wanted to mention about the scalability-stuff: scale later is fine of course, but IMHO you nevertheless have to think thoroughly about it in the beginning because of its strong relationship to pricing. How can I know, how to price my software when I don’t know what the scaling will cost me? So I think you need a good estimation of the neccessary scaling options just to get your pricing right… What do you think?

1. Confirming some of my long-held and often criticised views on software design.
2. Trashing some of my habitual working practices, but giving good reasons for doing it.
3. Admitting right from the start that ‘Getting Real’ is not an all or nothing philosophy.

Your book has given me some good ideas, motivation to change and an understanding of how you do what you do so well.

An excellent read.

“Every letter matters” (Page 101) sounds a lot like the direct marketing maxim U-COW… use the customers own words.

The checklist for the Powerful Promo Site (Page 135) is first class - that will get repeat visits from me.

I’m still agonising over “One Interface” (Page 102). If you end up building an app that looks like Filemaker, then i’d have thought there was a valid separation between what an end user sees and what the person who cobbled together the forms/database/scripts gets exposed to.

Finally, the book never mentions “humulity” or “humble”; success in itself breeds the seeds of it’s own distruction. Being able to say “no” in a manner than doesn’t sound arrogant is a key skill.

But overall, a compelling and enjoyable read. Unfortunately, my copy didn’t contain the Sunrise Golden ticket :-}

I have one question about htis book, in this book you talk about how you should design your web apps but if we follow your advice our apps will probably end up looking a lot like basecamp (or your other apps).

I think these are some good ideas and I would like to implement some of them in my site. But from having read previous posts on your site you can be defensive when other website implement these ideas (being called a ripoff).

I just want to know if it is ok to implement some ideas like this that you put in your book?

I haven’t read the book, but I ahve skimmed the free chapters and it seems fine to me.

The only issue I have is that I have two paid Basecamp accounts and I don’t appreciate haveng thier wads stuck on my Dashboard. You may call that petty but I call that inconsiderate.

Really no big deal, but it does bug me a bit.

Unfortunately I am now missing the opportunity to lend it to a friend. Sure you offer a 10 site licence, but the spirit is not the same.

I think I would prefer to buy it in print, then I can lend it to whomever I please without guilt or remorse.

Well done on self-publishing!

We pay RIDICULOUS amounts for books in South Africa, often 3 to 4 times more than they’ll be at Amazon. It’s also considered as a luxury item, so VAT gets added onto it as well.

I think your book can have a major impact on comanies down here. There are lots of smart startups, but many many barriers for getting a global company off the ground.

However, even though your book is cheaper than it would be if it were to be printed and shipped here, I beg to differ with Josh when he says:

$19 is still a lot of money down here! Toner is also more expensive!

So how about a marked down version for the third world?

Or even taking the Bruce Eckel approach? (free PDF, pay for print. Many people got the PDF and liked it so much they decided to get the print version too)

This way you’ll help many more startups to get off the ground, create jobs, create better websites, make end-users more productive… Besides for the ‘do good, feel good’ factor, a free PDF would also create massive amounts of brand awareness for 37Signals.

Could you please decrease the HUGE document margins so that MORE text will appear on each page so that the book can be reduced to 100 pages or less which could have saved some 134,750 pages from printers across the world for the 1,750 copies sold to date (assuming single sided printing).

Seriously, very inspirational book, but no freaking way is it at 170 pages. Can we possibly get a printer firendly version? this is like… 170 pages of paper, but only some 50 pages worth of text. I like to sit down and read stuff instead of having to flip a page every 30 seconds because there is like 1 paragraph per page.

How to print the book?

It has huge margins (outside the black box) and as a result font is so tiny it’s barely readable. Esp. if you printing in two-page mode (broshure). I’m in Europe printing on A4 paper if that matter.

As a result I have to read this from screen. ;-((

Has anyone had any problems with printing on a B&W laser printer? I’m getting most pages coming out with grey text that is hard to read. I opened one of the offending pages in Illustrator and the text definitely is black. Has some measure been put in place to make it difficult to print this PDF?

I haven’t even read it yet as I prefer to read it in print rather than onscreen.
