Apple and Motorola plan to unveil a hybrid cell phone and music player next week that uses iTunes. Engadget had what might be a sneak peek of it back in July. Meanwhile, Sprint said on Monday that by the end of the year it plans to offer phones that let people download full songs wirelessly.

I never thought I’d say it, but this sounds like a cellphone I would buy. I’ve always preferred having a dedicated product (a camera, a cellphone, an iPod) rather than something that combines multiple functions, but traveling with all these separate gadgets has made me change my mind.

The only problem is that what happens when you need to get a new phone, or if you want to change carriers? My Ipod will always play my music well, and I can independently choose a cell phone that will make the best phone calls.

I am seriously wondering why I would want this… I have a decent phone (Motorola T720), and battery life is still an issue for me, especially when I’m travelling… The absolute last thing I could imagine needing in my phone is something else to drain the battery that’s unrelated to the whole point of owning the damned thing.
I’m very much more interested in small tools for specific jobs. The more unnecessary nonsense attached to specific tool, not only is there a greater chance of it breaking on me, but there’s also going to be a more complicated interface, more compatibility issues, etc, etc.

Absolutely nothing, August, and I feel the same way. The way I see it, the more features and abilities you pack into something as small as a phone, the more they seem to gum up the works. And if your phone fucks up, guess what? You’ve lost your PDA, your camera and maybe even your iPod (if they go the route of packing all three together with a phone). Sometimes just making a full product (i.e. just a phone) is better than a half-ass product.

I only use my cellphone when I travel, and my iPod gets most of its use when I’m on the road as well. I like to travel light. So now I have to bring my laptop and its power cord, my iPod and its power cord, and my cellphone and its power cord. Sometimes I also bring my digital camera and extra batteries. All that stuff adds up.
If I could combine the cellphone and the iPod, that’s one less unit and one less power cord to put in my pack, and one less thing to keep track of. (I left my iPod in the dresser drawer of my hotel room on my last trip.)
So for me, the combined phone-iPod concept is attractive. But if I used a cellphone every day or if I used my iPod all the time, I suppose I’d think differently.

I can barely make a call on my cell phone without going into a fit of rage over miniscule buttons and shitty UI design.

Like several here, my feelings on hybrids are that each component is inferior to its dedicated counterpart. I think in this case, you wouldn’t make your iTunes phone your exclusive music player but a complement to your iPod. It’s a bit like the cameras in phones. They are cute for impromptu shots but don’t replace dedicated digital cameras.

I guess what makes this convergence attractive, and why anyone is even talking about it, is that it is the best of breed mp3 player being combined with a mobile phone. If it was a junky mp3 player in a mobile phone, I think we would just yawn.
For someone attempting to carry a blackberry, a mobile phone, an ipod, and a palm device with 802.11 access on public transport, convergence of all of these into one device that would be great for my pockets.
Camera integration is a little gimmicky to me, but the others all make sense to be on a single platform, because they are basically software and network applications. Moving software applications to a single platform makes sense.

Just say no. Seriously. I, personally, don’t submit to the notion that all of that tech is healthy. Slow down. Turn off the phone, the blackberry, and the palm, chunk them in a backpack and relax. Have a look around, listen to a few tunes. You’ll get more accomplished in the long run.

As Dan said, absolutely nothing. But as Dan didn’t say, that’s why there are like a million different phones out there for you to choose from.
I’m always puzzled by the outraged and indignant responses that invariably follow on the heels of these sorts of product announcements.
No one’s saying you HAVE to buy this product or that it was designed for YOU. Some people make it sound like new products are designed specifically to annoy them — in short, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it.
To mcknight, it may be an age thing (I don’t quite get the camera phone thing either), but camera phone usage has exploded among younger folk. So, as gimmicky as it may sound to some of us, there seems to be a sizable audience for whom it provides value.
Re: the iTunes phone itself, good for Cingular for having the cajones and the good sense to release this product. None of the other carriers is willing to because they’re blinded by dreams of song purchases padding their bottom lines — they want to control the music distribution piece themselves, which will almost certainly mean we’ll be seeing several laughably bad, intensely difficult to use and mind-numbingly complex song download interfaces in the near future.
And the product will almost certainly be less than great at first (the screen shots don’t look very promising), but once you’re able to download songs directly to the phone (the first version will almost certainly require that songs be loaded via a computer) it will get very interesting.
My biggest question is whether Apple will get into the mobile service business ala Virgin Mobile.

Apple (and Jobs, specifically) tends to avoid the saturated commodity markets, so I kind of doubt Apple will ever enter that particular business.

Amen. Cellphones suffer from the worst feature-itis. Does my (ostensibly bare-bones, free-with-service-contract) cell phone really need to have configurable wallpaper and a music mixer in it?

ek- I think you touched on the crucial thing about the mobile phone market- the fact that this crushes their insane price model for ring tones and other download services. $2.95 ringtones vs. $0.99 tunes is a serious mismatch. I can see a surcharge for downloading files over their bandwidth, but the real greatness with this would be greater synchronization capabilities with the broadband connected computer.
sdb- I usually throw the palm in my backpack because there’s no 802.11 signal on the bus or the train, but commuting is nearly 90 minutes per day, too much time to be out of touch. Each device is kind of the best at one thing, but at some point, the differences between the capabilities of separate and converged devices gets small enough that you can remove another piece of equipment from the nerd belt.

Darrel, Jobs may feel a need to enter the market out of simple necessity (which is what triggered the development of the iLife and iWork products and the move to open Apple-branded stores).
Aside from Cingular, no other carrier is going to offer iTunes compatibility any time soon. Instead, they’re each going to offer their own competing services. Whether that has any impact on Apple’s music or iPod sales is a big question mark, but if Apple believes that it will they may feel the need to jump into the provider market. And they may just go whole hog and offer wireless data networking as well.
We’ll see soon enough.

Last week I dropped my samsung on the kitchen floor for the first time in a year… it was only a 2.5ft drop and the speaker/volume broke. $290 later I got a new phone and the says guys kept saying that’s why you buy insurance. I kept saying that’s why products should be better tested; breaking on the first fall? Forget cellphones.

Maybe. No one really ever knows what Jobs is thinking. But since Job’s return, he has avoided the typical saturated markets (low end beige boxes, PDAs, CRTs, think clients, Printers, etc.) that others have gone after.
At least an Apple phone would be usable for me. ;o)

This makes me sad. When cellphones first started becoming available, my impression was that most people who used them were incompetent managers who either hadn’t hired trustworthy staff or weren’t able to delegate effectively, and therefore had to always be available to make decisions and give instructions. But I think what’s happened now is that so many people have cellphones that our formerly private time is now seen as fair game for managers and clients to contact us. That’s a shame.

That’s more than a little ridiculous. I spent February 2004 - June 2005 without a land-line, and only had cellular service from September 2004 - March 2005… when I really had to make a call, I used the payphones outside my apartment. Is somebody gonna die? Is it gonna matter a year from now? No? Then it wasn’t that important to begin with.
Seriously. If you can’t go an hour and a half out of your day without being wired, you need to chill out a bit. That isn’t healthy.

Horrible.
That phone has the number one anti-Mac user interface feature - the “hangup” button is on the right. Why couldn’t they have developed a phone that even remotely adheres to the Apple HIG? And isn’t it even an ISO standard that positive answers go on the right?
The above assumes you agree that the green “answer” button is positive, and the red “hangup” button is negative (as in a alert panel/sheet with the options for canceling or confirming)… A debate no one seems to even care about (all local service providers questioned my questioning of the subject), and phone interfaces continue to plunge into horrible-UI-land. The last phone I purchased was solely because it was the only one available in my calling area with the buttons in the proper order - the Motorola A630 (which, if it had iTunes in it, I would buy it all over again): http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/product/images/0,,66,00.html

If accurate, this article at Forbes.com (it’s based on info provided by an unnamed source) makes the iTunes-compatible phone sound like a very poorly conceived product.
I say that because the article indicates that the phone will be limited to a measly 25 songs. The really lame part is that the limitation is purportedly not due to the capacity of the phone’s included 128 MB memory card, which can be swapped out for a much larger one, but to a designed-in, software-based limiter.
So, no matter how large of a memory card you have, the phone will max out at 25 songs thanks to its built-in crippleware.
If true this would be a huge disappointment, but I suppose we’ll find out soon enough.
I think, though, that it would be wise for anyone who’s been looking forward to this product since word of its development leaked out many moons ago to ratchet down their expectations in a big way.
