Less Phone: The Moto PEBL 19 Mar 2006

One look at David’s new PEBL and I had to have one.
I’ve been a smartphone fan ever since the Treo 270. I’d follow the development of the new Treo months before it was released. Then I’d pay full retail just to have one the day it came out. Then when I tired of the Treo I switched to Nokia’s high end smartphones including the 6682 and most recently the N70. And I’ve eagerly been awaiting the new N80. I really do love Nokia’s latest industrial design work and I think the Series 60 is a nice platform.
The thing is, I’d be sick of the latest smartphone in a couple of weeks (and I’m not the only one). The day I’d get it I’d load a whole bunch of software on it. Show friends how I could IM on it or pull up a mini terminal window and make some changes on our server over the phone. But after a few weeks I just found myself using it as a phone. And smartphones are usually too bulky and clumsy for that.
I convinced myself I needed a smartphone when I really didn’t. What I really needed was Less Phone. A phone that made calls, picked up a strong signal, supported simple text messaging, and offered a dead simple calendar.
I’ve been longing for a simple design. A smooth design. Something small and comfortable and light. Something that worked really well as a phone. Something with buttons that were big enough to press. A phone first and a gadget a distant second.
And I found it in the PEBL.
It’s rounded, opens with one hand, has a beautiful and functional mini monochrome LCD on the front, and is sheathed in a tactile rubber that makes it satisfying to hold and easy to grip. I’m glad Motorola realized that phones don’t need to be made of hard slippery plastic.
Yeah, the Moto UI is a little clunky, but I’ve yet to meet a phone that has a nice UI (Nokia’s Series 60 is probably the best I’ve seen). Although we’re not doing any more web design work for clients, we’d take on a phone UI job in a second. Someone has to simplify these UIs. And fast. They are a mess. All of them. The phones are getting better on the outside but worse on the inside. If anyone is listening: 37signals would love to design a phone UI from scratch.
But in the end, the overall functional simplicity and beautiful industrial design of the PEBL won me over. I’m sold. Highly recommended.

The commercial is really cool too.

I’m flabergasted!

So the signal strength is good? How’s the volume? The few Motorola phones I’ve had including the Razr I currently own are pretty quiet.
David Hughes 19 Mar 06
I’ve just been through much the same…
I’ve just ditched my N70 in favour of a Sony Ericsson K750i - it’s the camera on this phone that makes it for me.

Have you ever used the SonyEricsson UI? I like it very much, although I know it’s not popular in the US.
(I’m not talking about smartphones like the P series, but phone s like the K750 and W900).
Paul Farnell 19 Mar 06
If you like the PEBL you’d probably also admire the Nokia 8800 (8801 in the US). That’s a beautiful phone, design-wise. I’ve been delighted with mine.
Grant Hutchins 19 Mar 06
I think that the competitive success of a good phone UI would be a watershed moment for interaction design. I feel like the general public would finally understand the idea that having lots of features is not what they want. I’m still shocked that none of the phone companies has stepped up and been bold enough to do it.
Then again, the carriers want to have a myriad of confusing ways to charge their customers. But they should realize the potential competitive advantage. I would pay an extra few dollars a month to use a phone with a basic, natural-feeling UI, devoid of the features I’d never use, and I’d like to think there is a large unsatisfied customer base that would do the same.
But then again, maybe no phone will ever convince people it’s worth buying for fewer features. “What, there’s no camera on it?!”
Brad 19 Mar 06
I’ve been saying this forever.
What I want is a really great phone that
1. Won’t break when dropped
2. Won’t break when wet
Too much tempermental gadgetry in the music/video/photo/text/gps/yetzle.
Julian 19 Mar 06
I’ve got a Sony Ericsson K750i and I’m very happy with the UI, it’s fast, useful, and actually pretty well done. Little details like showing the last few numbers you sent a text message to when you’re addressing a text message, and the way that siding open the camera cover switches immediately to the camera app and then goes back to standby mode (locking the keypad again if it was locked before) as soon as you close it really make you smile.
Plus, the keypad is good, the screen is bright and clear, and the camera is pretty damn good for a phone (2MP with autofocus).
Andy 19 Mar 06
Brad, you should search on the Ericsson R310. They used to make it like 5 years ago.
I’ve tried using it while taking a shower and I’ve also thrown it out of the third floor, which was no problem.
DaveyJ 19 Mar 06
SE K750i here, I was hooked on the SE UI ever since the T610.
Ever tried it? It’s a beautiful thing. Quick and functional.
Nick 19 Mar 06
Its actually more phone, and less junk. The camera is still there, but I guess it is no longer considered junk.
Also, my main problem with the Motorola UI is the Calculator (which I use often). Im not sure if it is different on the PEBL (I have a v180) but it takes forever to do simple math because they make you select each action with the arrow keys as opposed to assigning them to a button or modifier. By the time you are done scrolling from the addition sign to the equal sign your thumb hurts.
Dean Edwards 19 Mar 06
If you want a phone that is just a phone you can find a much cheaper one than this.
Marshall 19 Mar 06
I’d love to buy a phone that had a really excellent UI. Especially if it had bluetooth, and more so if it worked on Verizon’s network.
Alex Reid 19 Mar 06
The PEBL sorely tempted me, but in the end, the fact that it shares its UI with my crappy, was-supposed-to-be-temporary-but-now-I’m-stuck-with-it Moto C365. Ugh. ‘Clunky’ isn’t in it. Once I can afford it, I’m getting the SE K750i – like others have said, SE’s UI is just heavenly after Moto’s.
Jan 19 Mar 06
Well, with all due respect to 37signals, I would rather see Apple to do the entire phone. They have more experience with embedded devices ;)
An industrial design by Ive, simple gui similar to an ipod gui, fairly focused feature set, and easy syncing with a mac/windows.
Besides, I would love to see Steve explain an iPhone Shuffle. ;)
Alex Reid 19 Mar 06

Daniel Morrison 19 Mar 06
I couldn’t agree more.
I used a Treo 180 and 270 until I realized that the only app that got any use was Bejeweled.
I’ve been with Sony Ericsson for a T68i and now a T610. I love the UI, but the hook for me is being able to use iSync. I won’t buy a phone anymore that won’t sync my address book.
I also love the small size of the T610. It disappears in my pocket instead of clamping onto my belt buckle.
Sony Ericsson phones are not common enough in the US, and they keep them expensive by always adding a ton of features. I’m keeping the T610 until it dies.
Emory 19 Mar 06
@Paul Farnell — Seriously! The Nokia Series 40 UI is one of the best there is and the 8800 devices are the best I’ve seen in Series 40. They are absoultely beautiful and have a super-satisfying thunk when you kick up the display.
@37signals — Motorola probalby has some of the worst UI in the industry. If you can keep a straight face while using the PEBL be my guest, but I think we’ll see you back in S60-land for the N80 :)
RyanA 19 Mar 06
Alex Reid: Don’t buy a Sony Erricson! My last phone was a K700i and it lasted less than 12 months (and I take really good care of my stuff!).
It would say that I had 50% battery and then just die. Often when someone would call it would turn off when reporting it had half it’s charge left… Could you imagine how frustrating that would be when you’re nowhere near your charger and a client rings?
Plus the joystick stopped responding every time you tapped it. Plus you had 30 odd MB of memory on the phone for music and photos, but you could only store about 100 SMS’s before it said it was ‘out of memory’ and I had to delete some to recieve new ones…. !!!
The Nokia I had (I can’t remember which model) is still working fine 4 years later!
I’ve ditched the Sony and gone back to Nokia (I was looking at the Motorolla phones but couldn’t get pass the UI). I’ve got the new Nokia 7370. I highly recommend it (even the flip mechanism is incredibly solid, something of which I had some early misgivings!).
Shawn Oster 19 Mar 06
Thank you for admitting that about SmartPhones! I’m a big fan of the “Origami” project, at least in concept and so many people said, “yeah, well, a SmartPhone can do that.” Personally I want my phone to be just that… a phone.
Don Wilson 19 Mar 06
I’d rather have the Moto SLVR, but oh well. ;)
Dan Boland 19 Mar 06
I think any of the major cell phone manufacturers would be crazy not to hire 37Signals to come up with a brand-new UI. I know you guys would do a great job.
JF 19 Mar 06
If you like the PEBL you’d probably also admire the Nokia 8800
Tried it. Beautiful industrial design on the outside, but lacking on the inside. The buttons are too small, and the bottom row of buttons are really tough to press because of the way that the front slides down. I couldn’t overlook the fact that I often pressed the wrong button and couldn’t even hit the bottom ones.
Re: Apple doing a phone. Oh, I hope they do and I’m confident they will. The iPod UI for a phone would be perfect.
FredS 19 Mar 06
The iPod UI for a phone would be perfect.
Only if the wheel is used for dialing (old school finger-wheel style). Just kidding.
Jeff Croft 19 Mar 06
I don’t think anyone will hire 37signals to do a phone UI because there just isn’t enough room on-screen for 24-point type. :)
Whetstone 19 Mar 06
I’m a fan of the Nokia 6800—it’s, well, unattractive, but it’s a nice compromise between cell phone and “smart phone.” The flip-out keyboard has two advantages: it hides the keyboard when not in use, and the horizontal orientation makes it more like a regular keyboard. Compromise makes sense, for exactly the reasons noted above—smart phone functions are nice, but I don’t think they’re the dominant use.
It’s also been pretty rugged so far. It’s survived me, er, “dropping” it in frustration (over non-phone matters) a couple times.
The UI is pretty undistinguished, though. It could take advantage of the QWERTY keyboard; it doesn’t.
Kai Hendry 19 Mar 06
How about designing a mobile UI within the constraints of a mobile browser?
LIke Opera’s Mini, or the Webkit based S60 Browser, Moz’s minimo or perhaps Access’s Netfront. Could it be done? :)
That’s the way I see it going.
Anindya Mukherjee 20 Mar 06
I would like to see both 37signals and apple do the UI. Let’s see who wins the market :)
I have a NOKIA 6600.. and it’s really nice (i love the display screen the most), apart from the fact that it’s bit heavy, bit-wide-to-fit-my-hand and sometimes slow to respond after the keypress!
Saul Weiner 20 Mar 06
At the end of the day, you get new customers from looks and features and keep existing customers with service and OS. Go Nokia and LG!
Dick Davies 20 Mar 06
You’ve got a long way to go to reach ‘less phone’ if you think a PEBL is it.
If bluetooth headsets existed that didn’t make you look like a plum and broadband wasn’t everywhere I go, I might see your point.
Nokia 1100 does todolists and phone calls, and the battery lasts about a fortnight. Costs about 30 bucks.
Oh, and it’s got a flashlight :)
Jaydee Domingo 20 Mar 06
Used to be a nokia series 60 fan, not until I got introduced to SE’s K750i. The OS is simple and the UI is smooth. Though there are some things that could be changed to improve it, but all-in-all, it is by far the best and simplest UI/OS I’ve used. A good balance among eye-candy, usability and simplicity.
bishamon 20 Mar 06
have you check out those linux phone from motorola. I think they are a great phone. only problem, not enough apps develop for it to make use of the powerful kernel. The new Motorola A1200 looks great and exciting.
Su 20 Mar 06
What I really needed was Less Phone.
I fully admit that I’m a bit of a purist/Luddite/whatever in this regard, but let’s frame this properly:
You needed less Not-Phone.
Camera? Somewhat convenient, but not phone. MP3 playback? not phone. Streaming video? Not phone.
Smartphones are obviously in another class, where it’s more like you have a PDA which happens to also be a phone, but in that case, you seem to have just purchased the wrong item altogether.
When I got my last phone, the sales guy was visibly confused when he asked why I picked the one I did and I told him it was the “least offensive,” meaning primarily that it didn’t have a (crappy) camera in it that I wasn’t going to use anyway. I found that a bit telling.
I currently use a Razr. I occasionally set an alarm on it, have taken maybe ten pictures, don’t sync via Bluetooth(not that it worked), deleted all the games, and use a ringtone that actually came on it. I still have no idea what “MotoMixer” is for.
I chose the thing because I wanted a phone that was small and stayed the hell out of my way. I dream that the next step in phone UI/OS design is modularity so that I can remove some of this crap permanently.
Piotr Usewicz 20 Mar 06
Hm, yeah Sony Ericsson K750i rules.
Adam M 20 Mar 06
A phone that made calls, picked up a strong signal, supported simple text messaging, and offered a dead simple calendar.
To quote you back: less is more.
It seems that phone manufacturers are currently at the same stage as Microsoft are with their office products, adding features for the sake of novelty, but not really adding usefulness.
Ben Haldenby 20 Mar 06
I’d buy a 37signals-designed phone!
Christian 20 Mar 06
I’ve always been a fan of Nokia’s UI - switched to a Samsung for a while, but it’s just not as intuitive. Am currently using the 6270, which is pretty good. I don’t really use many of the other functions, because the key pad is too fiddly for anything but simple texting and calling, and the display, although good, can’t really be as good as a full PC / laptop. I think any UI overhaul must really think about fundamental limitations of phone design as well…
Bob Aman 20 Mar 06
You know, I almost feel the same way. I’ve got an LG VX4600, and I originally bought it because I told myself, “Self, you only want a phone.” Then I discovered that I really could’ve used a camera phone on many, many occasions. I originally figured it wouldn’t be necessary, since I was toting a Canon DSLR around all the time. But sometimes you want pictures taken really fast on the spur of the moment, and picture quality doesn’t matter. Then I discovered that I’d really like to use a headset now and then. I mainly got the headset for use with the PowerBook and Skype/Gizmo Project, but what sense does it make to not also use it with the phone, especially if the headset is 1000x better designed than the phone itself? Then there were all the little Web 2.0 apps that came along that I wanted to try. Knew I’d never use them, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t curious what people were developing. And then I started writing my own web stuff, and I wanted to know what my pages would look like on a phone. The VX4600 has a web browser, but it can only just barely be called that. And it only works every third Tuesday.
But dang, the VX4600 has a nice interface. Way nicer than any other phone I’ve ever played with, and the physical design ain’t half bad either. It’s a bummer that design isn’t everything in this case.
I’ll probably get a Nokia N80 when they are available.
Alex Cabrera 20 Mar 06
A couple of friends of mine have the PEBL and it is a great phone; but I just picked up the new SLVR and it is flat out the best phone I have ever owned.
It’s thin so it disappears in your pocket, has a great button layout with a customizable soft keys on either side of the frame. The keypad takes a little getting used to but after a while I find it much easier to use than the tactile-less feel of the PEBL’s smooth keypad.

So why DON’T you design a mobile UI?
Pull a move like those guys at SXSW did for craigslist. Who knows?

Derek Scruggs 20 Mar 06
My phone is a five-year-old Panasonic (really!) that I bought because I dropped my last phone and broke it. This one you could throw against a brick wall without damaging it. Every now and then I lust after a smart phone, but I’m sure I’d lose it or break it. It’s the same reason I only buy cheap sunglasses.
Geoff 20 Mar 06
I agree that all the UIs suck.
I’ll be picking up a Nokia E70 when they come out at the end of the month - they are fairly small (smaller than most ‘smart’ phones) but it has a full keyboard. I think it’s a great design and i’m glad you like the S60 OS, I was wondering how it was going to work out since my current phone is a Razor and the Motorola UI is terrible.
ToddZ 20 Mar 06
If anyone is listening: I would love to buy a phone for which 37signals designed the UI from scratch.
bort 20 Mar 06
you should totally design a phone UI. some of them are not bad (nokia, sony-ericsson) but most are just terrible (esp moto). phone UIs are long, long, long overdue for a fresh approach…
J. O. 20 Mar 06
This phone looks great, does anyone know which carriers provide it? Thanks.
Joshua Kaufman 20 Mar 06
I have a Motorola v525, which is about two years old. Unless they dramatically improved their UI, I wouldn’t ever purchase one again, I don’t care how simple and smooth it is.
And regarding top of the league UIs, Nokia and Sony Ericsson lead the pack. SE honestly doesn’t get enough praise the innovation that they’ve done in the mobile UI world.
I’m with David: it’s the phone-camera integration that I’m looking for. I’m tired of carrying around three devices, but I’ll wait for the Apple phone before I ever ditch my iPod. Until then, the SE K790i looks mighty fine.
Daniel 20 Mar 06
Someone has to simplify these UIs. And fast. They are a mess. All of them.
So true! I’ve tried Sony Ericsson (probably the worst), Nokia and Siemens. Siemens is probably the best (easy!) too bad they stopped.
I just got a Nokia N90 and I even had a hard time to setthe volume of my ringtone :(
The second worst thing is the buttons. They’re always too small or the wrong material…ugh! Its a multi-billion dollar market, wheres ‘the Apple’ of the mobile companies?
pwb 20 Mar 06
Why oh why don’t manufacturers incorporate scroll wheels??
JF 20 Mar 06
One issue with scroll wheels and phones is that the wheel is big and takes up a lot of space. If you want a wheel and a standard keypad you’re going to have issues.
I’m sure Apple will figure it out eventually.
Ward Andrews 20 Mar 06
Jason, Motorola is right down the street from you…why don’t you guys hook up for lunch and get the UI down on a napkin? :)
pwb 20 Mar 06
One issue with scroll wheels and phones is that the wheel is big and takes up a lot of space.
It’s definitely doable. My original Qualcomm 820, circa 1999, had a “dial shuttle” on the side, a la BlackBerry. Nokia makes one phone with a better positioned one:

Good point and great post. I haven’t been convinced yet that all these phones that will allow you to surf the web, while ordering chinese food, at the same time you’re calling your mom and girlfriend not to mention pressing your shirt are needed. Blackberry/Trio/etc. are TO much for the simple consumer (imho) and we should all look for less phone and more service, not more phone and less service.
As a California/Silicon Valley person, I see hundereds of people with their overdone phones (even some teens) and really, who needs all that? Go simple, go smart, make life a bit easier. Thanks for the thread.

I’m working with Motorola and the MIT Media Lab to design a different (more practical) mobile phone task-flow from the bottom up. If 37signals really is interested in designing a UI from scratch, perhaps we should talk.
Avi 20 Mar 06
What I think is interesting about phone UI is that they still include 12 buttons for numbers and letters. I find that most of the time I don’t dial, but scroll to a person’s name in my phone book or through my recent call list (I have a razr). The only time I ever use the number keypad is when I want to enter someone’s name in (I even ask them to call me so that I don’t have to manually type in their phone number) or when I don’t have the number stored (but I try to store every single number I ever call). And I was thinking what I’d really like is the ability to synch my phone numbers with outlook, gmail, something. So more specifically, what I could do is just enter in people’s numbers via a computer and send them to my phone. If my phone had a click-wheel, like on the ipod, I could still scroll to numbers and select them to be dialed, and worst case scenerio, if I need to dial from my phone and a computer is not around, obviously, you can make a clickwheel dial interface (like old rotary phones, so you scroll on the wheel to a clockwise list of numbers). I think once we get rid of all these useless buttons on phones, we will have much more useable phones. I hope someone one day does let you guys design a phone.
Kenny 20 Mar 06
37signals: I would buy many of those phones.
ejp 20 Mar 06
Why isn’t a timer option for quiet mode standard?
On my old Nokia, I could put the phone on vibrate until, say, 5:30pm, the end of my workday. No loud noise disrupting co-workers, but then if I get a call on the commute home, it would ring so even if my phone’s in my purse, I won’t miss the call. I don’t think I’d have traded in handsets if I’d realized the new Siemens didn’t have this feature.
David 20 Mar 06
I currently own a RAZR and loved the fact Motorola finally designed a clamshell with a decent hinge design, being a frequent dropper of phones as well as having kids around that love to see how far it bends. But with the PEBL, it looks like they went back to their old hinges, which break like champions. A sleek design is important and cool, but not at the expense of losing durability. It’s a nice looking phone and I love the outside LCD, but why can’t they learn from past improvements on something like a hinge?
Mark 20 Mar 06
Avi:
This is why the Danger Hiptop / T-Mobile Sidekick works for me.
I don’t use the phone much, so having a web browser/POP email client/AIM with a keyboard on my train ride in and out of Boston is useful to me. And those are smart phone features I haven’t become bored with.
The keys to dial are embedded in the QWERTY keyboard, which you actually have to open to get at them. But I can scroll through a virtual keypad on the screen when I need to enter a number.
But who enters numbers… Everything on the phone — email, photos, address book/contacts — is synced w/ my account on T-Mobile’s site in real-time. I enter numbers or events for the calendar on the web site and they’re right on the phone.
Avi 20 Mar 06
Mark:
I hear your point. The Sidekick is too bulky for me, at that size, it doesn’t fit into my jean pockets, which is where I want to keep my cellphone. And yes, I wear tight jeans, but as long as the pants fit on, I sport them but rock em low. In terms of the web browser/POP/Aim and keyboard, I guess I just don’t ever find myself wanting to check my email when I’m not at a computer (I’m at a computer at least 3/4 of my day anyway), engross myself in full length AIM conversations, or browse the web (after all, how many websites really work well on a phone?) from my phone, so I’d rather throw those features out and just have a really nice, easy to use, small, phone.
I love it that T-Mobile auto synchs your account to your phone, that’s a great feature.
Mark 20 Mar 06
I read SvN on it.
I know it’s not for everyone. I spend 25-30 minutes each way on a commuter train daily and it pads my workday so I can leave at a reasonable hour and be in touch by email and IM.
Its web browser is a double-edged sword: I have NO way to force it to browse using handheld styles, so it is hard to get to just the content, but it reformats everything through a T-Mobile server on its way to the device with pages restructured to be readable to a better extent. I typically read Google News, SvN, numerous blogs, etc on it quite functionally.
While it is more bulky, less is more when it comes to the cell phone for me. I typically don’t stick it my pocket when I’m out shopping or whatnot; it stays at home. To and fro work I slip it in its case on my bag’s strap.
Chris Korhonen 20 Mar 06
I switched to Sony Ericsson many years ago, and swear by them - excellent user interface, taking full advantage of the increased screensizes etc.
Currently have a w800, and its fantastic. A solid, small phone, with a very good 2 megapixel digital camera - perfect for the odd photo when I’m out and about. Radio is often handy, I can listen to Chris Moyles whilst I walk to work. MP3 player isn’t so bad, thought do prefer the iPod. Very convenient is the fact that it charges via. USB drive, and can be used as a USB storage device.
Only downside of Sony Ericsson is that they don’t seem to be interested in producing a decent flip/slider phone - instead focusing on the candybar/swivel ones..
Sam Sherwood 20 Mar 06
Anyone who complains about a Sony Ericsson UI just cannot be pleased. I had one before my Blackberry, and am so happy now that I’ve got another SE phone (W600i). Incredibly easy to navigate.
The PEBL may be “less”, but you pay a premium for that when compared to other phones… I’d rather have the myriad options in a comfortable design, than something stripped down inside of a pretty package.
Ned Baldessin 20 Mar 06
For me the ultimate less phone of the moment is the VK2020 : no camera, no java, 8mm thin, the size of a business card (really!), and a simple button layout.
Yet it has the one advanced feature I find usefull in modern phones : Bluetooth synchronisation (when it becomes compatible with iSync I’m getting one).
jsp 20 Mar 06

Just got a mention in Slashdot.

Scrollwheels don’t have to take up much space to be useful.
The Blackberry scrollwheel (on its side) doesn’t look or act like the iPod scrollwheel, but they both accomplish similar things. You do lose the 4 directional buttons from the iPod, but you gain functional wheel that works a lot better for long lists of contact numbers.
Am I the only one that tries to use the RAZR and SLVR directional pad like an iPod scrollwheel?
jeff 20 Mar 06
i think the phone companies could learn a lot just by talking to their customers. motorola has miles to go on it’s ui design for the razor.
Matt Davies 21 Mar 06
This is a great discussion and highlights the fact that ‘the perfect’ mobile UI has not yet been designed. I work in designing mobile UI for a major wireless company. We use a completely user-centred process, talking to customers on an almost weekly basis, using innovative prototyping of new concepts and testing them with users. The mobile industry has been slow to understand what users really need and want, but it’s getting there. The problem has been that everything is tech-centred, and tech-led - rather than customer-centred from the outset.
The industrial designs are certainly getting cooler and cooler - and the UI of the software needs to match this. Sony Ericsson are achieving this right now in my opinion. Their products are stylish, usable and have a ‘magic’ quality to boot. Just see how friend and people around you react when they move to SE from another manufacturers device. It’s like when someone opens an iPod box up, or gets a new Mac. It’s that wow factor combined with useful features, clarity and usability that I think will give SE a much larger percentage of the market in the near future.

Like Jason, I used to be a geek for PDA/smart phones.
Then I thought about purpose and when I use them. I need the email/web functions when I’m away from the office. But not when I’m out for a few drinks in the evening.
So I went for a plain phone and a Nokia 770 tablet. Phone stays in my bag and the tablet lets me email/surf when I need. Then when going out I leave the tablet in my bag or at home and just use the phone.
Fit for purpose…

I work for Nokia, phone I use everyday? SE w800i
Matt Davies 21 Mar 06
What makes you choose SE over Nokia?
Ebrahim 21 Mar 06
You need to check out Sony S700i for excellent UI.
Images, text, background, effects everything looks so great.

The motorola PEBL has the feel of a Zippo lighter. Just the right weight and dimensions. While not as satisfying as repeatedly flicking a Zippo’s cover - it comes close.
Fazal Majid 25 Mar 06
Nokia’s Navi user interface was certainly wildly successful. And their Series 40, while less functional than Series 60, blows it away completely in usability. I returned a 6682 within two weeks to go back to a Series 40 6230:

i’m not surprised that you decided on “less phone” (or what the industry calls a “feature phone.” smartphones rarely have such an elegant design, and simply cannot offer the clean, direct user interface of a feature phone. i would agree with many of the poster here that the moto UI in the PEBL is not the cleanest or best choice, but i suspect the physical design swayed you over the software. motorola’s new UI (which has first appeared in the v3x in europe and asia) is significantly improved over what you see in the PEBL.
i would also agree that the sony ericsson UI is much cleaner and easy to use than the moto (and wait until you see the latest version of it that will launch in the K790/K800!) however the sony ericsson and the new moto UI, even though they are clean and fast and easy to use are not what many of you, possibly even jason, want. it sounds to me what you guys want is a phone not just with a simplified UI but with simplified functionality. if that’s the case, you guys should look at what vodafone (a HUGE european carrier) is doing with its “simple” project. they have been launching phones with simplified functionality and a completely customised clean interface. the phones are good looking and the interface even better.
in fact, maybe a carrier, not a manufacturer is who 37S should offer their services to. many carriers (like verizon in the states) are forcing all manufacturers to use their custom designed UI, but these are rarely as good as the top end manufacturer UIs (vodafone simple is an exception to this rule).

i take my Samsung A650 when i go jogging- i have access to my hotmail and yahoo email w/ Verizon mobile web. for all other times, i get decent speed w/ EVDO on my Audiovox VX6600.
phi 26 Mar 06
I’ve basically chucked my smartphone for a “normal phone” as well. However, I went with a Sony Ericsson (w600i) because of its much more elegant UI. The address book is actually usable, as opposed to Motorola’s.
M. Terretta 04 Apr 06
While the Sidekick isn’t “less phone” in a physical sense, the user interface is a joy compared to others. The ergonomics of the UI and the physical device are extremely well integrated, in ways you don’t even realize until you “upgrade” to a Windows Mobile 5 device like the QTEK 9100 (T-Mobile MDA Vario, iMate KJAM, etc).
To explain this to people who haven’t used one, I say it’s the smartphone equivalent of OS X (Danger Hiptop) in a Windows (Motorola) and KDE/Gnome (Sony/Nokia) dominated world.
Olaf Mueller-Michaels 08 Apr 06
I had to get the PEBL, too. I am excited, I love this phone. However, what I do not like is that I cannot couple the PEBL via bluetooth with my Powerbook G4 (12”) running Mac OSX 10.4.6. Error message: No services available. I read forum posts about half-legally changing “flex” and firmware, but this is just not what I want. I mailed Moto support, no answer, yet. Did anyone have success in getting BT to work with the PEBL and Mac OSX?

I was looking for the same thing, and found the Nokia 6170 (http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/6170) - and have been very pleased with it so far.
The Pebl wasn’t around then, but it looks very tempting now.

I am a no1. one cell phone freak- dare I admit it.I have been through a range of phones this year and last year looking for the perfect one. Yes, I also convinced myself I needed a smartphone and I had the N70 too. I got the V3i and the V3x but now I am on to a HTC Tornado smartphone which is excellent but I do wonder when the little joystick is going to give up the ghost.
I am ginig through the ‘less is more’ on a phone now too - I am looking at the new Nokias - 6103,6125, 6131 ,etc.
Sony Ericsson has the best Ui and the W900 ( yes I had that too ! ) is a wonderful phone.
I agree that Motorola ‘s Ui really is very weird. The new linux based Motos are much better and I believe the ROKR 2 will have a great Linux based UI even better than the V3x UI right now.
Oh hell- all these phones have their problems. Please do design a great UI 37 signals !
