I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently! Why oh why would they do this?! It’s so wrong! It’s so stupid!
gee! an mp3 player with a HD! how original! kinda reminds me of a JUKEBOX i once knew.
I’d call it the Cube 2.0 as it wont sell, and be killed off in a short time…and it’s not really functional.
All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field is starting to warp Steve’s mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off.
There are already two products similar to this on the market. The Nomad Jukebox and the Archos Jukebox which can come with a 20 gig HD. The iPod is obviously alot cooler and has firewire, but it is far from revolutionary. I for one am disappointed and think that apple is making a mistake by trying to get into this market.
Apple should have just listened to their customers and never released the iPod.

You guys rock. I think a lot of people miss that you all started out at other companies, then merged into 37S doing freelance (“like the rest of us”) and eventually transformed into what you are now: a group of talented cats who like to build web apps _you_ like.
That’s one thing I will always remember about my brief time trying to make video games: Make games you want to play, not others.
Of course, add a healthy dose of “your mileage will vary” for all those crazy people who need more signs and more words and more disclaimers and more crap in their lives. ;)

It’s entertaining to read these comments in light of what actually transpired. (Of course, there are similar anecdotes for almost every new technology - from the telephone to the airplane.)
It’s worth suggesting that Apple’s success with the iPod to-date really has not much to do with the iPod ! (huh?)
Apple’s success with the iPod is the cultural capital it has built *around* the iPod via software and products that continuid the building of interactive, participative communities. That’s where its at. The future is product ecosystems.
Here’s a catchphrase you’ll be hearing more often, I think:
“PRODUCT ECOSYSTEMS”

1. the ipod isn’t revolutionary, and isn’t innovative, especially the newer ones. there are better values for portable mp3 devices. the batteries die and those white earbuds make you a target for muggings where i live. and so those postings are partially correct. what they couldn’t predict is how well designed and marketed the ipods would be.
2. taking the opinions of people who post on mac gossip sites as representative of all customers and potential customers is insane.
3. people are stupid for paying $1 per track on itunes.

Now people panned the iPod and we all know it was a huge success. Because so many people are panning the iPod Hi-Fi, does that mean it too will be a huge success? I’m thinking not. I’m guessing the iPod Hi-Fi will be off the Apple website within a year. There’s more to this than just listening or not listening to your customers. The idea you start with has to be good.

JF: We couldn’t agree more.
Would you mind elaborating a little more on what you consider the top five things to consider when building a product? I’m thinking more in terms of any product, not specifically web based applications. I think the general idea is applicable to all products.
Not the processes involved or the development style, the ideas and reasons before the product enters the design and development stage - product motivation seems fitting.
If you have posted something similar, can you point me to it?

Steve I don’t really have a top 5, but here are a few come that come mind: 1. build something you enjoy building, 2. build something you need, 3. build something that gives you chills, 4. build something you’d want to buy if someone else built it.

All very good points. The two that reflect my particular way of thinking are number one and number two. A word to note in your post is the use of the word ‘you’.
I am currently building a web application that I will use and need and it helps to keep me motivated and focused on getting it complete. If you lack the drive and overall motivation for your product to succeed, then it will more then likely fail.
I think Steve Jobs used this principle when deciding to build the iPod. Maybe not directly focused on himself, but certainly more centred on something that he would buy - which is point number three in your list.

Jason, what are your views on demand? Customers demanding a product. In my mind this adds the obvious constraint of time, but if enough people are demanding it, that seems to imply a solid customer base.
Does the heavy constraint of time out weight the possible customer base. Or, does the lure of the customer base prove too tempting to ignore?

the true ipod cynics are the ones who bought that first generation ipod, used it non-stop until the battery died or something broke, didn’t have the money to buy a new one, and then soon realized that an ipod is not that necessary. but i would never tell an ipod owner that.

Can anyone chime in?
Companies need to find a balance between being technology and market driven. If you are go too far in one direction then you risk producing a product that may be technologically superior but ahead of its time. Going the other way, you may get stuck in the circus by producing for the market (media, analysts, customers, bloggers, etc.)

I won’t nit pick against the first half of this statement since it will not add much value, but will say that the “newer ones” are indeed derivative products. They are what generate short term cash flows and pay the bills.
Perhaps some of the frustration lies in the fact that they are expecting Apple to release breakthrough, market defining products every release. As I noted on a different post, companies would do well to maintain balanced portfolio approach to their projects/products.

While I don’t think the iPod HiFi can remotely be said to be revolutionary, I think the launch day is a little early to write it off as a dismal failure, either. This is going after the same market as the Bose SoundDock and the Klipsch iGroove & iFi, and the fact that those exist—and have been around for a while, in Bose’s case—suggest that it’s not just Steve Jobs who thinks people will want something like this. (I’m surprised the yoyos on digg aren’t whining more about Apple competing with their third-party developers.)

Just remember there’s always a luxury market and Apple’s customers often wind up shopping in that market. Apple is pretty damn good catering to that market.

One could argue that they did in fact listen to their customers, and that’s why the iPod was so successful. Apple simply ignored the vocal minority of nerdy haters like those from the macrumors thread. ;)

I doubt Apple listened to anyone on the original iPod. Just like the original iMac without the floppy. People didn’t know what they needed or wanted. Apple innovated on behalf of their customers because Apple built something they (Apple, that is) wanted. They knew if they wanted it then their customers would too. They’re seriously good at that.

That old thread reads like nearly every “new release” review on the Internet, for almost any product imaginable (try reading movie preview forums for the same thing).
While there are some positive comments, its overwhelmingly negative - it seems to be the default state for the whole medium sometimes.
Companies don’t need to respond to this stuff because the haters seem to be the most vocal people online, for anything. It’s a false sample of your prospective market.

Apple is good at discerning between what people ‘need’ as opposed to ‘want’. The iPod itself fulfills the basic need - simple, stylish music player. The ‘wants’ are taken care of by the accessories.

I’ve always been surprised at just how well Apple’s products have been received by ordinarily critical audiophiles - magazines and the like. I’ve always thought they were good, but that’s a tough nut to break.
I’ll be interested to see how they get on now they’re involved in sound output as well, could affect how they tune the iPod sound in future.
_Does anyone know if they’re making the speakers / amplifiers etc from scratch? Or if they’ve gone with an existing leader?_

As usual the flamers don’t quantify their points so immediately should be discounted.
Me? I don’t like the LOOK of the Hi-fi thing as the photos I’ve seen have a 5G iPod on top which looks… odd… it’ll look worse with a Nano there I’d warrant. Very un-Apple like to have something “sticking out” … I’m perplexed by the design.
Whether it’s a bad idea or not… we’ll see. It’s not leapt onto the top of my list.

I’m not an iPod or an Apple fan (stated just to frame my comments for appropriate dismissal – I don’t think I harbor any dislike for Apple either, but have admit I’ve never put my own money down for a Apple product – maybe my frugality).
Those quotes are wonderful, and it’s both fun and satisfying to revisit the comments of detractors after a success.
It seems there are always detractors and, funny enough, they’re often most vocal when something is poised to be a success (the ‘who’ and ‘why’ of it is probably revealing here).
But…it might be a mistake take all disappointment and skepticism as a sure sign of good things to come (again, ‘who’ and ‘why’ is important). And, I believe, it’s equally a mistake to extend that ‘listening to customers’ equals compiling with the wishes of nay-sayers.

Steve Jobs is the original less is more thinker. Apple, thanks to his vision, is also one of the finest examples of a company that builds its marketing into the product. The original translucent iMacs, sans the floppy, is a perfect example of both of these points.
1. Less is more - don’t need a floppy anymore
2. Piss off the PC nerds by choosing option #1 (built in marketing buzz - the more the PC nerds say the MAC (Jobs) is stupid, the more the dedicated MAC user believes Apple is doing the right thing).

I think the iPod Hi-Fi is a great idea.
Look at the back of that thing, you think that extra input is JUST for Shuffles? How about plugging your mac Mini into it?
I’m thinking that I could get rid of my giant old stereo system (which is a pain in the ass to take with me when I go back and forth to school) if I got that thing, and I’d also have a nice way to bring my iPod to a party.
I’m sort of debating on making the switch right now though, I kinda want a Mini, but I want to use dual screens because I’ve gotten accustomed to programming like that. Maybe an iMac?

Actually, I’d say it’s about 90% want, maybe higher. Apple is really good at making people drool over stuff that, when you get down to it, they don’t _really_ need. When I really consider my priorities, an iPod is one of the lowest things on my list. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love to have one.

OK.. Look at this from a different point of view. Say 1 in 10 iPod owners buys a speaker system for their iPod. And say 1 in 10 is willing to spend the amount that Apple asks for. And say 1 in 5 actually chooses Apples solution over say Bose, JBL etc. That means 1 in 500 iPod owner will purchase the thing. Currently there is suppose to be around 35million or so iPods in circulation but I would say maybe only 32 million or so is still in use. That give Apple the potential to sell to 64000 of these. Not great compared to the number of iPods sold but not bad for just a iPod accessory. You have to put things in to context…e.g. how many of those bose sound docks have they sold etc

Reminds me of a page from SpeakUp’s small book Stop Being Sheep about focus groups.

But it was right! The iPod was a dud… but made it because Creative Labs was sleeping, as was Rio. Creative had their Nomad with dual battery slots and 20GB that palyed for 15 hrs… at the time the Neistat Brothers got pissed off because of bad iPod battery life and painted down New York (thanks guys - changed corporate arrogance…)
iPod got into critical mass because the competition slept! Creative Labs in particular no matter how much whining the Singaporean Manager manages. He shot himself in the foot with repeatedly un-cool products. And the rest is history. And nobody will ever catch up as iPod is just an instrument now for proprietary iTMS and once hooked, never leaving… and nothing wrong with that.
But certainly a study worth a PhD…

Actually, I suspect that of the people willing to spend $350 on an iPod speaker, more than 1 out of 5 will choose the Apple box, because its very existance will convince more people with “money to blow” to buy it when they see it in the Apple Store. I see more than 64,000 being sold. But even taking that amount, if their profit after R&D, marketing, etc. is $150 (and I think that’s a conservative number), they still make $10 million.
But I think that’s even beside the point. It’s a brilliant product for the very fact that it *doesn’t* need to be upgraded. After such a big investment in home listening, the spendhappy user will eventually look at their “old” 4th-Gen (or whatever) iPod, think it unworthy to blast through the HiFi, and ring up a new $399 iPod because it plays videos/checks email/answers the phone/detects landmines. I know people like this. And they never pick up the check at restaurants.

The ipod itself isn’t revolutionary, its how they used it to push a billion songs to the masses that made it. iTunes as a delivery system should really be getting the honors here more so than the ipod. It does score nicely on the form factor and the hd at the time but its clearly itunes that made it massive. Not just for legal means to music, but it needed an outlet, a 24/7 champion to stay on the radar of consumers. iTunes is it.
I think the comment about the luxury market is dead on Apple markets to the luxury market extremely well and that cascades down to the masses.
Apple’s core fan base however seems to demand serious innovations outa steve and his crew and expect the amazing every time where as Apple seems to have gone the route of what makes sense in a simple, sophiscated, luxury, relaxed mindset design kind of way.
There’s fans and customers, and Apple knows the difference.
Fans are already tearing apart the hi-fi box and it still kills me not one reviewer out there now going on 4-5 days since the annoucement has yet to comment on how it actually sounds. Fans see the hi-fi box as a big expensive bose risk not gonna sell box.. but customers in the range of that $374? box.. well

Just reading these comments indicates to me that Apple has perfected the art of listening to customers while not ceding control of their implementation.
Features are what customers ask for, but a product is what they buy. The Ipod is OK on features, but destroys the competition as a product.
