Ricky Gervais’ Simpsons Episode Matt 05 Oct 2005

Simpsons Gervais Later this season the Simspons will air an episode written by Ricky Gervais in which he’ll appear as a David Brent-like character. He moves in with Marge as the Simpson family takes part in an episode of Wife Swap. You can peek at some of the storyboards at his site. And if you’ve yet to see, check out the pics of Ricky from his days in Seona Dancing, an 80s New Wave pop duo.

the show sucks 05 Oct 05

Finally, maybe the Simpsons will be funny again.

Johannes 05 Oct 05

Does he write any software?

Darrel 05 Oct 05

“Does he write any software?”

I’d say most corporate enterprise software is written in the same voice as ‘The Office’…highly ironic, rude, annoying and obnoxious. The only difference is that I don’t laugh at my enterprise software as much as The Office.

Dan Boland 05 Oct 05

Is that really the same guy (as the one in Seona Dancing)? It doesn’t look like him at all.

Danny Cohen 05 Oct 05

yipeeeeeeee, this season the simpsons is funnier than past ones… i love Rickey Gervais … “racial.”

Don Schenck 05 Oct 05

I am officially “old” now. I have no idea who Rickey Gervais is.

But I DO remember Chet “The Jet” Walker.

Chris 06 Oct 05

he is a fat moron froma program called “The Office” from the BBC.

it’s a crap show about a paper company (no, i’m not making this up)

Pim Geerts 08 Oct 05

I loved The Office, and a love the Simpsons!
Ricky is a genius, I ‘m sure he’ll elevate this episode to an unexpected level!

wirrow 09 Oct 05

chris ur a faggot.

the office is the best thing since powdered egg

Andrew 08 Dec 05

Chris obviously had the attention span of well…he doesn’t have one….but I’m sure he makes up for it in charm and eloquent use of words. To quote, “he is a fat moron froma…” Need I go on? Chris—don’t bother wasting your time responding to this comment. Instead, write a show based on a simple premise as the everyday lives of the average human being while still finding personal fulfillment, get more than two golden globe awards, and then you’ll have my attention.

Cheers,
Drew

Mark 14 Dec 05

Chris you are a stupid little hairy penis
The Office is amazing

I watch it time after time and still cringe magnificently

Matt 29 Dec 05

The Office, Animals, Politics and Extras are all amazing… even Flanimals is brilliant. I must admit I’m losing interest of the later Simpsons episodes but I know the Ricky Gervais one will re-kindle my love for them. Can;t wait.

PS: Chris sucks ass. The Office isn’t just about a paper company, there’s more depth than them selling paper, num nuts. Mark, you’re right!

David in England 05 Jan 06

The office shows us as many of us are. Trapped in a boring life with little people around us. David Brent, the main character, is loveable and hateful at the same time. He makes life fun for those who laugh at him and with him. He is us on a bad day and us on a good day. Characters we all know interact with him but never get close. Its a dream of a show, written by thinking people who make us feel that our lifes are now documented for the whole world to laugh at. Ricky is a golden talent and one who puts ideas before money, a mate you’d like to have a drink with even if you don’t drink.

Ben 05 Jan 06

Chris - what a plum!

neil in the uk 06 Jan 06

anyone know when’s this episode going to be on tv / what number episode ????

is it series 17 (i think you call it ‘season 17’)

Mark 06 Feb 06

@Chris
To quote Gervais in Extras: “I don’t want to make a comedy for people without a sense of humour […] I don’t want it filmed in front of a live studio audience.”

Chris - Gervais’ subtle comedy has resonated with so many people worldwide; to call it ‘crap’ is clearly narrow-minded and really not the most intelligent choice of words. Nobody has ever produced a comedy which appeals to 100% of global taste. His (and Merchant’s, of course) material is gaining a strong reputation (for many years here in the UK) for being the sort of comedy which requires contemplation and above all, creates an awkwardwess caused by the viewer’s over-familiarity with the graphic depiction of our modern western way of living, working and interacting. It is the sort of comedy which requires attention and disection and multiple viewings to really appreciate to its full, like any truly creative piece. Not everyone has patience when it comes to comedy. Those who don’t may like to stick to more familiar and traditional territory such as material based on people prat-falling or dick jokes.

Like I said, it’s not for everybody, but you are displaying an acute narrow-mindedness here - maybe instead of ‘crap’ you may have considered ‘Not to my taste’ to be a more apt description.

Now bring on the dick jokes, come on people, make Chris happy. ;)

Melanie 10 Feb 06

Mark,
That was brilliant. Thank you! I couldn’t agree with you more if I had said it myself.

**His (and Merchants, of course) material is gaining a strong reputation (for many years here in the UK) for being the sort of comedy which requires contemplation and above all, creates an awkwardwess caused by the viewers over-familiarity with the graphic depiction of our modern western way of living, working and interacting.**

Awkwardness, that’s exactly it. And I know that I could not name even one other show that will set me to tears from laughing so hard at a characters facial expressions. Martin Freeman slays me and was the perfect straight man. The casting for this show was almost as good as the writing.

Chris is an idiot. But then again, someone had to watch Dude Where’s my Car?

Jonjo from Essex in England 17 Feb 06

Ricky Gervais is one of the best comedians ever, the new series of the simpsons has only just started showing here in england and it looks like one of the best series so far, i cant wait to see ricky gervais in it, does anyone know which number episode he will be in, Ricky Gervais and Homer simpson will make a classic episode.

Alan 23 Feb 06

I bet Chris likes ‘Friends’.

Colin 13 Mar 06

Ah… the price of freedom.

Wow aren’t you lot quick to jump down throat of dissenters.

I bet if you knew where chris lived you’d go round and lynch him for having the nerve to call Ricky Gervais’ David Brent a fat moron, which of course he is ( Brent not Gervais). And the comedy is set in a paper mill so no lie there either.

Why not counter Chris by saying why you like the office (which some have done) rather than battering him to death for having the nerve to disagree with you as it borders on fanaticism.

Voltaire: ‘I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,’”

Ad 26 Mar 06

Everything Ricky has done has been nothing short of brilliance. A complete breath of fresh air for the world of comedy. For that i am gratefull..
oh and what date is the Simpsons episode?

Andy 26 Mar 06

Ricky Gervais is a pure genious!!

Just thought id share with you all that 2 weeks ago i bumped into and had a chat with none other than Stephen Merchant! lol

bleh 15 Apr 06

Its aired on the 23rd of April.

Ricky Gervais is a comic Genius, and deserves some more awards. The Office and Extras were like works of art, and he can make you cringe when you least expect it.

Oh and “ToMmO” stop acting like a moron, with grammar like that, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear you’re still in primary school.

homer........ SEXUAL 18 Apr 06

Hi! I hate Ricky but hey, I LOVE THE SIMPSONS!!!!!!!!

I reckon futurama is better though who else does?

Colin 22 Apr 06

Futurama, why did they ever cancel it. Murdoch getting back at Greoning for constantly taking the piss in the Simpsons i’ll bet.

By the way, I’ve seen the Gervais episode of the Simpsons and what a dissapointment; nothing new just re-hashed Office gags. I never laughed out loud once.

In a poor Simpsons season it managed to stand out as particularly poor.

As comic book guy would say, “Worst episode ever”

All those in the UK being blasted with the Sky hype are going to be V. dissapointed.

person of the fly in the UK 22 Apr 06

Ricky Gervais is like the best thing that happened to comedy. The simpsons is the best also.

Ricky+Simpsons=the best

(the episode is on @ 6:30 sunday 23rd aprill 2006 on sky one

Percival 23 Apr 06

I honestly think Friends has better writing than that of The Office.
Anyway, I’ve seen this episode and it was really really bad. They all are now. It must be stopped, I mean 372 episodes? They need to bring out the film quick and put Futurama back on air. Really, they do.

Shaun 23 Apr 06

lets face it…..ricky gervais has got nothing apart from david brent…..and thats to be polite…….not very good!!!!
the guy should be taken off tv and locked away

sam 23 Apr 06

lol, i love alan. and percival, the episode was awesome, especially the beating your wife to death joke. Gervais is one of the finest and most subtle english comedians in history.

I quite frankly got very bored of the attention seeking humour in most US sitcoms, especially friends, so people like gervais and bill bailey have raised the barrier in intelligence and attention span in comedy.

and yes, futurama is very good, not quite as good as family guy though.

Sam - in the UK

Rich - UK 23 Apr 06

I agree wit sam.

If u didnt find Ricky’s episode funny, then im afraid you have the intellect of a stapler…a dumb one. You cant just look for the obvious comic cliches, u actualy got to think about whats going on and being said, the simpsons is now definitely funny on more levels.

If Fox know what’s good for them, they’ll bring Futurama bak.

Yourself 23 Apr 06

Actually, the Simpsons has been going downhill for quite some time, and even Ricky Gervais’ efforts aren’t enough to bring it back up to standard. I watched that whole episode hoping it would be good, I didnt even laugh once.

Its about time Fox stopped flogging a dead horse and cancel the Simpsons - which has become exactly the type of show it used to lampoon in its heyday. Its a terrible shame really.

Colin 23 Apr 06

Well Rich I’m afraid I must be a dumb stapler.

Maybe you could lower yourself to give me a critique of the deep multi-level gags throughout the Gervais episode.

The Simpsons used to contain a lot of (not so) subtle political satire, now nothing; cheap gags that barely raise a smile.

Many of the early (pre-season 10) scenarios were everyday life events taken to ridiculous ends. Now, the Simspons basically do a world tour or take ridiculous events to ridiculous ends.

Some of the best episodes have been about such mundane things as crazy golf tournaments or new collegues at work.

But maybe I speak to soon Rich, so you go ahead and enlighten all us dumb staplers to multi-level humour and satire in the Gervais episode.

Yourself 23 Apr 06

^exactly.

In Gervais defence, his episode was no more worse than other Simpsons these days…but still, I had high hopes.

People seem to be in denial that the Simpsons has dumbed down, Fox will never cancel it because they can still make money from it, not that that is a testament to the quality of the show, some people haven’t noticed that its gone crap.

I hope they dont bring Futurama back, it was a constistently funny show throughout its run, if they brought it back they’d run it into the ground like the Simpsons.

Jimbo C 23 Apr 06

I think the topic of Chris ‘the muff’ is over. But i saw what he had to say bout Ricky. This guy (Chris) has got no sense of funny, get in the real/new realm of comedy. That is Gervais and others (i,e ‘the mighty boosh’). Desipte not being gay i would love to ram my fantastic penis into any of Chrisy boys available orifices.

Jimboc 23 Apr 06

Your a Dickhead too Shaun. Smoke my pole.

Maria - England 24 Apr 06

I havent seen the Simpsons with Ricky in it but I am looking forward to it. I wont criticise anyone for their opinions - to each his own - but I like Ricky Gervais and think that his comedy (Animals and Politics rock!) is great. And he’s British! Yay!! The reason America marvels at Gervais’ comic genius is that for all their shows (eg: Friends) they hire hundreds of scriptwriters who all work on different episodes while Gervais and Merchant wrote the scripts for the Office themselves. This seems to blow the minds of Americans and so they hail Ricky as a genius. I for one am content to sit back and enjoy his comedy, smiling in the knowledge that for once America appreciates us Brits.

Ste & Georgina 24 Apr 06

This show was one of the worst episodes ever, and that’s saying a lot. If this was Gervais’s showcase for his comedy in America and there was any justice, they wouldn’t have him back. Why has nobody noticed The Simpsons should have been axed about 7 years ago? Truly awful - a travesty - the writers should hang their heads in shame. Oh, for shame!

a different chris 24 Apr 06

Christ don’t some of you go on!!!!!!

Gervais is a genious….. full stop!!

Also the Simpsons is great and will never get boring, Futurama is even better, and i’m sorry but Family Guy and American Dad are even better than that.

SO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

daniel 24 Apr 06

I dont have the intellect of a stapler, but I do not find Gervais funny in the slightest.

a different chris 24 Apr 06

never mind daniel….. i’m sure Ricky finds you hilarious mate.

a different chris 24 Apr 06

Actually…. how did you even accidentally come accross this site if you weren’t looking for gervais in the first place?….

bit strange for someone who “doesn’t find him funny in the slightest”

me 25 Apr 06

lets all poke fun at chris!!!

a different chris 25 Apr 06

what me…. or that tit from earlier?

Dean - England 25 Apr 06

Ricky Gervais is a genius, I can’t wait until I get to see this new episode, English comedy and American comedy mixed together should be a bloody good mix :)

Colin 25 Apr 06

To say anyone is a genius full stop is the kind of fundamentalism we’ve been talking about (everyone can have an off day)

In my opinion ‘The Office’ was uncomfortably hilarious, his stage shows were v.funny too and ‘Flaminals’ or whatever was a big hit with the kids.

But that Simpson episode; that was his off day.

Maybe Merchant has been the genius all along.

a different chris 25 Apr 06

fundamentalism my arse….

of course people have off days…. i’m sure einstein had plenty but that didn’t stop him being a genious full stop did it?…… and peter sellers was a lunatic but the fact that he was pure bloody comedy genious is unquestionable…….. picasso could have written the book on bad days but it turns out he was quite highly rated……

everyone has an opinion and i’m sorry but if that many people believe someone else is a genious then to some degree they must be, and i’m afraid that in his particular field ricky gervais falls into the catagory of genious, as i’m sure merchant does too…………………………… so ner

by the way in case anyone hasn’t yet seen his episode of the simpsons its episode 15 of series 17……. you’ll find it all over the net if you have downloading facilities

sitcom from australia 26 Apr 06

good on ya chris, i think ive seen every brittish sitcom there is and i have to say the office is hands down the best in my opinion. ricky gervais is a funny bugga. he just has to look in the camera to make me laugh. merchant is a legend too!
looking forward to seeing this simpsons episode….
have you guys checked out his podcast….what a killer!!
….in ricky i trust….he’s pure genious

Yes Chris and these off days make them… human.

A genius maybe, but not a genius Full-stop.

the fundamentalism lies in saying Gervais did it so by association it must be the best thing ever full-stop

no offence akaash but you talk like a cyborg and you say everything three times more than you need to……………..

just to clarify things how exactly would you classify ‘Sir Isaac Newton’….. if you could also tell me your definition of genious that would also help me understand things….. thanks mate.

Gervais is quite simply an over-rated unfunny git. Yeah?

I haven’t seen the RG episode of the Simpsons but most of my mates did and said they were horribly disappointed. Yeah?

He also has a fugly cheesy grin. His idiotic appearance on the Live 8 stage confirmed my opinion that he is absolutely no comic genious.

Paul Oduffy 31 May 06

If anyone doesnt like Ricky Gervais then thats your prerogative. I must emphasise that anyone that will watch what he has done will do so at different levels. Only the ‘high brow’ viewers will fully appreciate its complexity and genius. Likewise (no offence to anyone here or other-there) people with less intelligence will only see it at a basic level just like the stapler in the jelly and everything else seems alien as they cant see the wood for the trees as it were and appreciate the true fabric of its creation. More-over it was fashioned for people with a sense of humour who are fully aware of the recursive, monotonous and saturnine lifestyle which is western civilisation and for those who comprehend the meaning of irony and not for those who in its place merely see coincidence. Over-tanned, false white teeth actors were omitted for a reason.

Cogito ergo non satis bibivi

NICE ONE PAUL!!

Colin 21 Jul 06

Yeah paul, very intelligent….and very off thread.

This is about THE SIMPSON’s EPISODE not Ricky Gervais in general. (by the way the argument ‘if you don’t like Gervais it’s because your thick is hardly going to win over any doubters).

The Gervais Simpson’s Episode was CRAP, there was no high brow humour, no stapler in the jelly - itwas lame, lame, lame and no amount of Gervais is a modern day comedy genius comments is going to change that.

It’s not an either/or thing. You can like Gervais’ work in general but hate that Simpsons episode. Go on, allow yourself to not like something he did, it’ll make you feel better.

By my reckoning the Office was brilliant but Gervais should not have bothered trying to make flanimals. There is plenty in Zoology to fascinate and intrigue and cause humour and I would have preferred to have heard an educated Zoologist’s sketch rather than an uneducated layman’s. Unfortunately the simpsons episode lacked all the great Simpsons sense of humour and was one of the most boring episodes ive ever seen - apart from maybe some of those silly Halloween episodes that Americans seem to love (obviously we Brits dont put so much importance on Halloween as the Yanks). Please let the Simpsons Team do their own humour- don’t try and change it’s style - it works.
