This may be somewhat old, but is still one of my favorites and inspires me everytime I see it:

Veerle. Love the design.
Mario Parise 12 May 06
I second that Veerle link. She’s awesome.

Inspiring in a back to basics sort of way. Make sure you check out the video.

The whole “feeling” of this site inspires me … music, faded images … everything feels like it’s somehow from the 70s.

I’m always a big fan of web creme, which posts several amazing designs every day.

http://www.releaseme.ca/search/
Just to plug something I worked on: I am very proud of how this client search turned out. Although, search is actually a misnomer here; it’s really a filter.
We provide visual feedback on how many results you can expect from your search as people drill down on exactly what they are looking for. We dispensed with keyword searching completely, and in doing so allowed for 100% relevant results with no practical reason for an empty result set.
For bonus points, we made each search have it’s own permanent, unique URL; you can bookmark it, or send it to a friend - and keep an eye on what you are after without having to constantly re-enter your custom search.

A joint collaboration between Jesse from 31Three and Sean Sperte. Really well done…

You’ve got to be kidding. Looks like something a five year old did in frontpage
foodswami 12 May 06
t.z.f. no ajax, no flash, just a 5min/spare time project of our monthly adventures.
think of it as a blog updated once a month, monthlog?
nickd 12 May 06
Yes.
Jesse 12 May 06
Why must entire flash sites keep popping up in design :( If anything those are frustrating, not inspiring.
Chris Busse 12 May 06
My favorite website design:
http://www.airport-cgn.de/
There is a book called “Köln Bonn Airport Corporate Design” (ISBN 2-85893-734-6) that discusses their design. It talks about how they came up with an entire icon, type and identity system. Very inspiring!
David 12 May 06
The Raconteurs web site is made to appear like an old green screen interface. Caught my eye and made me nostalgic for the commodore 64.
Patrick Rhone 12 May 06
I hate to self promote (No really, I do) but the design of my site certainly fits into this theme:
http://patrickrhone.com/
Michael 12 May 06
One thing I am tiring of quickly in “Web 2.0” (I hate this term) design is the whole soft, pastel pallette that everyone seems to use (and abuse). It’s like hanging out in a maternity ward. As for me, I can’t wait until the web grows up some more and gets back to bold, powerful colors that I appreciate.
Dan Boland 12 May 06
Why must entire flash sites keep popping up in design :( If anything those are frustrating, not inspiring.
I agree. Most of them are beautiful and eye-popping for sure, but I always end up yelling at my screen for the animation to stop. That and the incessant need to resize my browser window. Thaaaaaanks.
The Raconteurs web site is made to appear like an old green screen interface. Caught my eye and made me nostalgic for the commodore 64.
Now this is Flash done right. Too bad the music is so-so.

I thought that the holding page for http://www.eBible.com was pretty nice graphically.
Peter 12 May 06
I have many favorites, but if I had to pick one from the past reboot would have to be http://www.bopia.com very cool colors.
Mike 12 May 06
Bopia’s font is too small, it is also eerily similar to http://veerle.duoh.com/
Ahsan 12 May 06
Wow! The airport site rocks
Jason Trout 12 May 06
I would like to think that this is inspiring.
http://www.TheActionBlog.com
I just launched it on Tuesday, so if anybody has any feedback, I would love to hear it.
Jason
Peter 12 May 06
Mike, I have to desagree, I do not think www.bopia.com looks that much like veerle’s blog, maybe the dark colors but tons of reboot sites are using dark background. It’s in.
The font is a bit small, but you can always receize it to your liking.
Mark 12 May 06
Here’s one, although I’m not really sure “inspiring” is the right word…

Veerle’s website reminds me of Ordered List. That was the first website that led me into learning about web standards and stop using tables forever (next to ALA and CSS Zen Garden).
And what do you know, there is a picture on his Flickr photos of veerle!

Any lost fans here?

It’s really a beautiful site.

http://www.gamespot.com/e3/index.html
Gamespot’s E3 website has a really funky “monster” cartoon theme that has great colour management, typography management and information flow (despite being full to the brim, but you can’t really expect anything else from such a type of website). It uses CSS effectively and minimal markup and feels really tight and clean, and also has hardly any overbearing advertisements.
Roman 12 May 06
Gotta love Firefox tabs, was able to flip through all those sites real quick.
I think Veerle’s and Ordered List are the best:
http://veerle.duoh.com/index.php
http://orderedlist.com/
Now to restart Firefox, acting like a dog.

It’s funny how most of these are Blogs or Design portfolios! Any commercial examples of good Web Design out there?
I like how Boden has handled displaying item availablity on their product detail pages here. However, it is a little difficult to figure out how to Add to Cart. But when you figure it out, it makes pretty good sense!

interesting product and webdesign. shame that their software wouldn’t download. i’ll try again tomorrow…. tomorrow… tomorrow.

I think the GE website is really nice in it’s layout and intuitive to navigate, given the huge conglomerate they are.

Though it has great usability, I may not have paid for it if it weren’t so damn beautiful.

eric i think it’s amusing when two companies use the same clipart: www.advantageconsultingservices.com/
Jane 12 May 06
Maybe it’s because I’m a copywriter, but I loved this site’s navigation: http://www.beanology.com/
Matt Carey 12 May 06
I know it is one of mine, but the site for the London International Festival of Theatre (Lift) we launched last week is going down really well. A modernist design ethic behind it (so not at all web 2.0).http://www.liftfest.org.uk
RS 12 May 06
Thanks Jane. That nav is really original.

Simply stunning!

Thank you for the links - I rarely get inspired by design on the web these days. Everything I see is a blog - even pretty sites like Veerle’s leave me wanting.

Most links above are for design studios, I found this site while looking for better business bureau, they have a very nice and clean interface and a good system for creating complaints about companies http://www.beenfunkd.com
Cheshire Dave 12 May 06
Paul — they’re very similar, but not the same. Even if they were the same, 1) that’s the nature of stock images, and 2) at least Eric’s site did something interesting with the image.
Nice job, Eric.
I’m also pretty impressed with the Veerle site. Quite a lot of stuff, and yet it doesn’t feel overwhelming — feels more like the design invites you to stroll around the site.
condor 12 May 06
I’ve always been inspired by american apparel
http://www.americanapparel.net/
also the fact that they use yahoostores to sell their product online always sat right with me, they didn’t go out and try to cobble together their own ecommerce back end, they went with what worked.
Mark 12 May 06
Whether or not this is inspirational I guess depends on how you define that. But this site is non the less effective, powerful and gets the message across in a simple way.

iQ Content appears to especially like the usability of Adaptive Path’s website ;)
Rob Poitras 13 May 06
One page portfolio site + partial page of music.
http://www.drewflaherty.com/
The site design gets out of the way of the illustration work, which is really the showcase of the site.
Andres Walker 13 May 06
This site design is great, I love it!
http://www.emaginacion.com.ar/
The weblog isn’t bad either!
Erin Kurtz 13 May 06
Shameless self-promotion, but still a pretty cool experience.
Leopold Ketel and Partners
erik 13 May 06
i have allways loved this site’s layout
www.beelerspace.com
Gilbert Lee 13 May 06
It’s mostly black and white, but I find the New York Times an absolutely beautiful site. Reading it is almost a reverent experience.
--Josh 13 May 06
And emaginacion seems to like the graphical design around here.
The funny thing is that they try to take a jab at 37signals with the motto “Them: Less is more US: Balance is more” on a site with the entire color palette and style lifted directly from 37s.
foodswami 13 May 06
yo,
I usually check out fcukstar.com awards, some really nice finds.

Veerle is completely overrated, its nothing good really at all design wise.
Its purely an eye candy site.

I love the shopping cart at http://panic.com/goods/
bob 15 May 06
…and I was wondering why the web was getting boring. Nothing on this list has been inspiring. Everything looks the same…except the flash sites, which look like every other flash site out there.
Where is the talent in this industry? Are all the designers chasing after the latest fad and forgetting to design something meaningful?

PDHoss, perhaps adaptive path’s usability is a bit like iQ Content, no?
Back to the point, though, I like Cork’d - by Dan Cederholm of simplebits.com, great design.
andr3 18 May 06
I just couldn’t believe noone posted about Bryan’s latest redesign…
http://www.avalonstar.com
His previous design was also inspiring… as was the prior to that… and the prior to that as well. (…) The dude’s amazing!

I agree with Bob. There is little here that is any different. Every one of these pages looks like they could be from the same designer. What the butt is going on?

this was on a site listing sites that have those sublibnal images sort of hidden in then, i had to press the refresh button to restart the animation at the top, looks like there is stuff in it but to me it seems a bit over the top
