Steve Irwin, the Croc Hunter, dead at 44 Jason 04 Sep 2006

Steve Irwin, known as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed by a stingray in a freak accident.

If you’ve never seen Steve on TV then you should. If you have seen him then you’ll know how much he’ll be missed. Luckily he lived his professional life in front of the camera so his legacy will live on for decades. He brought his brand of enthusiastic conservation and environmentalism to a TV audience of over 200,000,000 people world wide. He taught by sharing his joy about his work, not by preaching to people or scaring people with worst-case-scenarios. From 5000 miles away he made you smile.

Steve was authentic, passionate, curious, and deeply knowledgeable about his craft. He approached his work with a off-the-charts level of enthusiasm. We should all have as much fun at our jobs. We should all love what we do as much as Steve loved what he did.

Most of all he had a tremendous respect for his work and the animals he worked with. Any bites, any mishaps, any close calls were his fault, not the animal’s. Steve was in their territory, they weren’t in his. And he reminded his audience of this all the time.

It’s always tough to say goodbye to a true original. They’re a rare breed. And in this day and age of the mixup and the mashup and a general trend towards homogeneity, the true original is such a precious gift. Losing one in their prime magnifies the absence.

So long Steve. Thanks for sharing.

Well said.

Chris 04 Sep 06

Yeah, I’d agree. Well said. The great thing about Steve, in my opinion, was that he wasn’t afraid to be himself.

Passion lost another king.

Well, Steve Erwin’s Australia Zoo headquarters are just down the road from us. His death is tragic but he was a person who took silly risks in front of cameras on many occasions. His Michael Jakson stunt with his baby in the croc feeding enclosure was just one example of his attitude to TV and promotion.
His personality and enthusiasm was refreshing and his economic contribution to our tourist region and the community was enormous, but his over the top, in your face, interaction with wildlife almost guaranteed he would have a shorter life than someone like David Attenborough.

mano 04 Sep 06

he was great!!! rip :(

Mike 04 Sep 06

If you ever had the pleasure of meeting or seeing him perform in person - there is no way you could walk away not feeling more upbeat about life. He gave us a rare glimpse into a side of life 99% of the world’s population will never know. A bloody great bloke!

beto 04 Sep 06

If there were more Steve Irwins in this world, life would certainly be a less screwed up and more enjoyable affair.

It is hard to believe this kind of news, specially since few characters in media come across exuding so much lust for life and living as Steve did, and his enthusiasm was infectiously contagious, even if you couldn’t care less about crocodiles down under or thought the man was a wacko for living in the edge like that. That should teach us all a lesson on how we take our daily life challenges.

Godspeed, Croc Hunter. We’ll never have enough of you around.

Dave Morin 04 Sep 06

Well said Jason, my friend. Steve will be missed :(

MrFunk 04 Sep 06

Why on earth is it a bad thing for Steve Erwin to have a baby near a crocodile, yet it’s fine for Joe Sixpack to put his son in the back seat of his SUV? Steve Erwin was safer around a crocodile than most people are in their car, so how is it even an issue? He was raising his kids to be like him. Of course it would require exposure to “deadly” animals from a young age.

Dave 04 Sep 06

Thanks for commemorating such great hero, Jason.

May be he was only 44 years, but Steve squeezed more out of a day, than most people from a year.

It’s better to live one day as a tiger than a thousands years as a sheep.

We’re all going to miss him.

Nathan de Vries 04 Sep 06

As someone who idolised Harry Butler as a kid, it’s truly sad to see someone of equal caliber disappear overnight.

That being said, I think it’s a shame that Steve still continued to throw himself into the line of fire after having children. While I’m sure Bob and Bindi will be taken care of by their loving Mum and the tight-net group of friends Steve has accumulated over the years, nothing compares to having a father - especially one as passionate and caring as Steve.

The degree to which the world will miss Steve pales in comparison to the sense of loss his children will have over their lifetime. Let’s hope his enthusiasm and passion for life has been passed on to them in the short time they’ve had together.

Anonymous Coward 04 Sep 06

As an australian suburbanite, I often cringed at how Steve chose to express his passion. But on reflection, it was just a knee-jerk response to the sheer energy of the man. He was able to utilize all he had to get things done and for that he diserves the recognition of, and the impassioned response to, his life.

Anonymous Coward 04 Sep 06

Nathan de Vries, I can appreciate your concern for his kids, but this particular case was a freak accident. Only 2 or 3 people in recorded history have died this way. You could fill pages and pages and pages of things that most people do every day that are riskier than what Steve was doing.

Baz Scott 04 Sep 06

Another comment from Oz here, one of the great things about Steve was that - as we know - he really cared about the environment, *really* cared. To the extent that I read today he had a plan to buy an island and turn it in to a kind of modern day Ark for endangered species. Maybe someone should do it in his honour.

Don Wilson 04 Sep 06

He’s such an amazing person, will definitely be missed by all of his fans, humans and animals. :)

Ross Hill 04 Sep 06

People can talk about the risks he took, but Steve knew what he was doing - he loved every minute of it and died doing what he loved, what a life.

Bob Aman 04 Sep 06

I am seriously going to miss that guy. I queued up all his stuff on netflix for a farewell of sorts.

Andrei O. 04 Sep 06

Oh man, I’m still shocked. The guy was invincible, I never expected this. His exuberant love and care for the nature made a deep impact into the respect all the humas have for their planet. Only people like him could save this beautiful planet from an ecological disaster.

Very well written Jason!

Sergio B 05 Sep 06

I saw in person here in Los Angeles just a few months ago. As usual, he showed us wild animals, taught us and made everyone laugh. He passionately loved doing what he did like few people I’ve known. How sad to not have him anymore. He always said he’d give his life to protect animals and that’s just what he did.

Michel Christensen 05 Sep 06

Very nice obituary. He was indeed a person, that was one-in-a-million.

indi 05 Sep 06

I and my family will truly miss the man. I really feel for his wife and kids. The news reports say he was filming a segment on dangerous reef animals for his daughter’s new TV show … that’s crazy making irony.

Rest in peace mate - Crocs rule!

Devan 05 Sep 06

Steve achieved in one day what most people would never do in a lifetime. He will be truly missed.

Last night, on local Australian TV, they replayed an interview that Andrew Denton did with Steve Irwin a couple of years back. Here is a transcript:-

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/transcripts/s1732743.htm

But you HAVE to watch it live to appreciate the other side of Steve Irwin, and what drove him. It was truly an amazing interview. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry.

If anybody knows where an online copy of this interview is, please find it and take a look.

Seeya Steve…

ginny 05 Sep 06

Very saddened to hear of the Croc Hunter’s death and shocked that it was due to a bad encounter with a stingray.
I swam with about 15-20 of them in the Caymans years ago - a memory for a lifetime. Steve gave us lots of memories - both funny and touching. I’ll admit - I was rather hard on him after that incident with little Bob, but on reflection, he was doing what we all want to do with our kids - just saying, “Hey, isn’t this world amazing!” And he did his own way - full of emotion and energy and without pretense. In a world where being blase, jaded and cynical is part of being status quo, Steve was a breath of fresh air.
May his enthusiasm for life and concern for the natural world be a legacy to him and a source of pride to his family.

manuel 05 Sep 06

i just read this in the newspaper- fuck.
i always loved steves shows.
like jason said: a rare breed.

good on ya mate! i miss you.

Serdsar Kilic 05 Sep 06

I was shocked when I first read about it, and after 24 hours I still can’t believe it. He died doing what he loved, and was a great Australian icon. He’ll be sorely missed it.

dandan 05 Sep 06

I truly enjoyed his enthusiasm for his profession; it was infectious and came across on the screen. I’ll miss the guy on a Saturday afternoon.

JoJo 05 Sep 06

The end of an era.

Rob 05 Sep 06

Steve was one of the few entertainers that my kids and I enjoyed equally. He was definitely one of a kind. God bless you Steve.

Elizabeth 05 Sep 06

Steve Irwin was a wonderful man, a brilliant zoologist, and conservationist. My sympathy goes out to his family, friends, and those who loved him.

Good-bye Steve Irwin Crocs Rule
You will always be missed

Pete 05 Sep 06

I am sure many of the creatures he mistreated are not going to miss him. On countless occasions he has actually hurt the animals he was showing off for tv. I remember on one occasion he had a poisonous snake in his hands and it kept biting at him, Steve finally freaked a little and threw it about 5 feet. The snake didn’t move for a while and was hurt.

You don’t teach by provoking wild animals. I am sad about his unfortunate death, but most people knew that sooner or later something like this was going to happen.

Joe Ruby 05 Sep 06

Steve Irwin’s death is truly sad and tragic. He was larger than life and a real character. He will be sorely missed. That said, it’s amazing he lived as long as he did — he was constantly narrowly avoiding getting bit by the world’s most poisonous snakes (while handling them while many of them were constantly snapping at him, and trudging through habitats infested with them wearing nothing but his trademark khaki outfit), getting chomped by crocs, and much more.

Goodbye, mate.

Leah 05 Sep 06

I just wrote on my own blog, about how in college we would watch CH and say, “If we feel that good about going to work, then we have really made it. If we don’t, we’ll keep looking.”

He was an inspiration about doing what you love and following your passion.

Brian Burridge 05 Sep 06

It’s ashame that so many watched him as he worked with animals, and instead of seeing the passion and courage that Steve had for life they only saw danger and fear. He knew what he wanted to do, and he did it with passion and commitment, despite being told it was too dangerous or that he would some day fail. We can all learn a lot from him, and hopefully his legacy will not only be about the beauty of these animals he taught us about, but also his inspiration for us all to achieve our dreams, despite those who preach negativity, danger, and failure.

sassi 05 Sep 06

Yes Steve Irwin was a great guy who showed his love and appreciation of animals to the world. Also i agree with the people who said he never blamed the bites ect on animals he said he was in their territory and had to be very careful.
Rest in peace steve. Thanks for love and caring of animals and showing it to the people of the world!

Steve Irwin, learned from a good father! If we had more people like his dad ,and Steve himself, this world would be such a better place. The risk he took,(pooh), although Iwouldn’t have. The respect ,and dignity, and believe it or not, the way he did EVERYTHING, he always had his dad’s teaching in his head, and his heart. We as a “endangered”,species should step back ,and look out before we all get bit, by our ownselves. Thank you JESUS ,for giving us a good teacher! And FATHER thank you ,for welcoming him into “your jungle”. Please bless the family, and take care of them. AMEN

Jason - Thank you for writing a tasteful article on the death of Steve Irwin. It was classy and well written. Many other articles I’ve read address Steve’s death with a air of triviality and lack of respect for his profession.

I saw some of his TV programmes, he’s very daring, he approaches all these animals with his bare hands most of the time. To many of us, I guess it’s very dangerous.

But I guess to him, he’s doing something which he love to do… and won’t trade it for anything else in this world.

A great man… (not forgetting the many out there who are doing to the same but not as popular too.) :)
