  • A good plumber or electrician
  • Which stores in my area have a specific product in stock
  • Laws (how do I find out if something is legal or not?)
  • Are there bike racks near this address?
  • What a product *sounds* like when you use it
  • The best way to get from Point A to Point B using public transportation in the top 10 major cities in the country (and the average travel time for the route)
  • How long it takes to walk somewhere (if we’re driving it’s easy to find out, but what if we want to walk?)
  • How much an average cab ride will cost between Point A and Point B

Got others?

i agree completely about laws.

legitimate statistics are hard to find. you know like what percentage of people do this. impossible.

nuna 10 Aug 05

or to find anything which might possibly have the same name as something sexual.

Rik 10 Aug 05

London has a very good public transport website for getting from A to B. Maybe more major cities should follow its example…

http://www.tfl.gov.uk

Mark Hurst 10 Aug 05

The “point A to B” tool is really well done, for NYC, here:

http://www.hopstop.com

Jesper 10 Aug 05

I completely agree about stuff like the first two items (stock in stores and plumbers). The problem with those is that smaller stores and plumbers/electricians/whatever firms just don’t see the point in having a web site. There’s a very large opportunity for someone that can reach out to those firms and make something usable for the people looking for the service.

JF 10 Aug 05

Mark, hopstop is wonderful. I really wish others followed their lead.

nickd 10 Aug 05

This may be part of the “laws” point, but parking regulations. Why can’t I often get a PDF or .gif (Google Maps may be asking too much here) of a busy neighborhood’s map, containing streets outlined in different colors to indicate metered, free, or permit?

Matt Schinckel 10 Aug 05

Australia has whereis.com.au, which will give driving and walking directions from/to any addresses in Australia, including approximate travel times.

For example.

Brad 10 Aug 05

The website for Concept 2 (the rowing machine machine company) does show you what their product sounds like, which is a nice touch. The challenge, though, lies in communicating decibels, because you can just raise or lower the volume of your speakers when listening to a sound clip. I can’t think of a good way around that problem.

In Quebec, you can find out online which SAQ stores (state-run wine and liquor stores) carry a particular wine you’re looking for, which is a very useful service and has saved me many fruitless trips.

And while it’s true you can’t necessarily find a good plumber by doing an online search, you can find tons of information to show you how to do basic plumbing repairs yourself. I just fixed our toilet by going to Google and typing in “toilet slow to fill” and found all the instructions I needed to fix the problem.

Colin D. Devroe 10 Aug 05

  • Phone numbers for people that you have no idea where they live
  • Web site URLs for people that do not name their site the same as their URL
  • Information about poker, viagra and donkey sex

Scratch that last one, I just got comment spammed.

Peter Cooper 10 Aug 05

Laws (how do I find out if something is legal or not?)

I always thought the government should send you a book when you turn 16-18 with a list of various general laws. I mean, there’s so much you can do that doesn’t seem wrong unless you’re told by someone else.. such as not paying taxes under self employment.

JC 10 Aug 05

>Phone numbers for people that you have no idea where they live

http://www.zabasearch.com

Brad 10 Aug 05

I forgot to mention that the SAQ site in Quebec even tells you how many bottles of a particular wine each store has in stock, so if you need a few you can be sure to go to the right store, or if they only have one you can call and ask them to reserve it. Very slick, I’d love to see more of that.

Marc Hedlund 10 Aug 05

> Which stores in my area have a specific product in stock

http://www.licketyship.com/ (developing…)

Bill Brown 10 Aug 05

Brad: they could always do a few comparisons. This is as loud as: a telephone ringing, a herd of stampeding elephants, a mouse farting, etc.

From Point A to Point B in Madrid:

http://www.ctm-madrid.es

Andi 10 Aug 05

I’d also add that it’s hard to find the offical website for hotels. Sure, you can find loads of search engine spam versions, but it’s always difficult to find the real site.

Bernhard Seefeld 10 Aug 05

almost all public transportation in switzerland is planable through http://www.sbb.ch/ (you can even enter addresses!)

or go through http://map.search.ch/ and find a stop near your destination, enter your start point and hop over to sbb.ch. if you leave from somewhere, bring up the map and you will see the next departure times directly inline by hovering over the stop.

Faith 10 Aug 05

Add to all of these personal health/beauty care. Without word-of-mouth recommendations, finding a good doctor or hair stylist is rough. A visit anywhere new is basically a gamble - especially with women’s hair salons. You have no idea how much it will cost, what their experience is, or if you’ll get what you want.

It will be interesting to see whether the sites designed create networks of word-of-mouth recommendations are successful or not. I’m thinking specifically of Judysbook.com and InsiderPages.com. I’ve been rather impressed with the first so far…

Steve F. 10 Aug 05

A directions system that gives you the fastest/shortest way to get from A to B, then B to C, then C to D, then back to A. In other words, a system that can figure out if I am better of stopping at D then heading to B then C than some other way.

I am thinking about small business guy making deliveries.

John Zeratsky 10 Aug 05

Jason, do you use the CTA Trip Planner? It’s clunky and straight outta ‘98, but it works well. I use it all the time.

Beau Hartshorne 10 Aug 05

What about customer support phone numbers? Quick, can anyone tell me how to call PayPal? (Answer: +1 402 935-2050.) Something like bugmenot.com, but for telephone numbers. Is that even legal? :P

Marc A. Bélanger 10 Aug 05

There’s a website for searching canadian (Federal and provincial) laws which is quite usefull. Then again, there’s just the text, no explanation of what it means…
Montreal also has its A-to-B public transit engin, which works okay. And yes, the SAQ site is great for finding good wine (although I think the stocks are only updated once a week).

Michael 10 Aug 05

Most people walk 15 to 20 minute miles. Some slower people can take up to a half hour. The reason a driving time is provided is because it depends greatly on speed limits between the two distances. You can’t just divide the distance by 60/mph and get yourself a time. Although walking times vary per person, they are almost always constant for a given person. Therefore calculating a walking time equates to one trivial division.

Eric 10 Aug 05

@Steve F.

That’s the so-called “traveling sales[person]” problem and would be trivial to add to any of the mapping/directions applications out there.

It can get computationally expensive as the number of stops increases. For example, if you have 4 stops, A, B, C, and D, you would start out by computing the directions (to get distance and/or time) b/w A-B, A-C, A-D, B-C, B-D, and C-D [in other words (n-1)!]. That gives you the distances/weights on the vertices of the graph. Then you would have to search the graph for the shortest route that travels through all points.

But if you had 10 stops, then that’s 9! computations of directions. 9! is 362,880. So it blows up pretty quickly.

Undoubtedly there are heuristics which you could use to minimize the computations without diminishing the results. Clearly if your stops are clustered in a few small regions (imagine a UPS driver delivering to a few neighboring towns), then you could perform the computations within each region separately, and then do the computations at the region level.

Ed Knittel 10 Aug 05

@John: you beat me to it.

Jason, I thought for sure since you’re also in Chicago that you’d know and use the trip planner. It needs some serious updating but otherwise it’s very useful. What I wish the CTA would do is make their schedules as plain-text and not only a PDF so the information would more accessible.

As for the walking time issue try Gmaps Pedometer to get the distance and then you could use Naismiths Rule and figure out the length of time (at approx 3 miles per hour it would take 24 minutes to go 1 mile)

Mihira Jayasekera 10 Aug 05

Finding good restaurants in the area is tough if you don’t live in a major city. (Even if you do, I find that sites like Citysearch really miss the mark — I can’t distinguish sponsored content from editorial reviews, etc.) Online newspaper reviews are difficult to search/browse in a meaningful way, and you only get one person’s take. I’d love a site that allowed visitors to post their own reviews (somewhat Amazon-style, or maybe more like Epinions), and to see a list of reviewers’ favorite restaurants in the area. (You find a reviewer with similar — or maybe very dissimilar — taste, and then see what else she liked.) I’m hoping 43 Places turns into something like this, but it doesn’t have nearly enough of a user base in my neck of the woods just yet.

Darrel 10 Aug 05

Beau: GREAT idea.

As for plumbers, that’s what http://www.angieslist.com/ is supposedly for.

That said, I signed up for that service and found it severly lacking. In the end, for that type of service, word-of-mouth still seems to be the best route to take.

What I get frustrated is that there still seems to be plenty of industries that are hodling on tight to the ‘wholesaler -> distributor -> customer’ concept and either refusing or simply not being aware of the fact that the internet can connect the customer directly to the wholesaler. I find this mainly when looking for architectural/construction/furnishings/furniture type items.

MH 10 Aug 05

…or anything which might possibly have the same name as something computer-related.

www.centamap.com

Public transport A-B in Hong Kong. Even has pics of the bus stops.

Ugly site but very useful, packed full of stuff. Perhaps 37 Signals could do an interface makeover on these guys. Site is operated by a major Hong Kong real estate agency.

Jake Ingman 10 Aug 05

Not as easy as it could be - but is the start of a solution to the “how long it takes to walk from A to B”, the gmap pedometer:

http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/

Ed Knittel 10 Aug 05

@Eric - Re: @Steve F.

Great explanation of the complexity of calculating the route between multiple points. And while it might not be ideal as a web app there is desktop software out there that does do the calculating for you (you mentioned UPS - I’m certain the shipping industry has been using systems like that for many years)

RouteView Pro at $1,895 and requires additional mapping sofware looks to be a solution.
RouteFinda DLL is another.

I’m sure there’s more but that’s what I was able to pull up quickly on Google.

Jesse 10 Aug 05

www.wmata.com is great for getting around DC, NoVA, and MD. You can choose to use just the Metro, or combine buses and Metro. It gives you time and distances as well as fees. Pretty much the best thing on the internet. (if you live here)

Dan Boland 10 Aug 05

John Zeratsky: I fucking hate the CTA Trip Planner. I agree that it’s outdated as hell, but for me, it works less often than it doesn’t. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten the “there was a problem, call this number” screen and wanted to scream. At least we know what the CTA isn’t spending their operational budget on.

jim Ray 10 Aug 05

a decent place to find apartments when moving to a town. rent.com has the worst interface.

Faith 10 Aug 05

@Mihira: social guide to restaurants

Try www.dinnerbuzz.com - it’s really new, and doesn’t have anything posted yet in Ann Arbor - but it’s similar to 43 Places, just focused specifically on bars and restaurants.

Try Judysbook.com, too… They already have restaurant reviews posted to Ann Arbor.

Tomas 10 Aug 05

Colin D. Devroe: Web site URLs for people that do not name their site the same as their URL

Um, http://www.google.com.

John Zeratsky 10 Aug 05

Dan Boland: Weird, it works for me pretty much all the time. Well, “works” in the sense that I don’t get an error message when I try to use it :-)

John Zeratsky 10 Aug 05

Jim Ray: Try Craigslist.

Swati 10 Aug 05

What a product *sounds* like would be great to know…

Kim Siever 10 Aug 05

“The best way to get from Point A to Point B using public transportation in the top 10 major cities in the country “

Which country? Or did you mean the top ten major rural cities around the world?

David Balatero 10 Aug 05

In Seattle, you can do Point A to Point B trip planning at http://transit.metrokc.gov

David Mytton 10 Aug 05

If you want to walk, take the bus, drive, take the train, find a coach, compare journeys (e.g. car to public transport), view it on your mobile and find out the latest traffic info in the UK, then try out http://www.transportdirect.info - the government’s under-publicised super system for getting anywhere. You can even get the cheapest tickets there (I got cheap tickets to London cheaper than direct from the transport company).

Steve 10 Aug 05

Kind of like finding whether something is legal or not, I find that it’s difficult to find a feature that is *not* supported.

For instance: does this program have this feature (like all its competitors)? No, it doesn’t. But you don’t know so you keep trying to find out how to do it.

Martin Bialasinski 10 Aug 05

For Germany:

The federal laws: http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/bundesrecht/GESAMT_index.html (and after taking a look at the list, you consult a laywer ;-)

The official statistics on just like every aspect of life: http://www.destatis.de/themen/d/thm_prodgew.php

I thought it to be standard. The stuff is there, taxpayers money was used to produce it, so it obviously is online.

My home town Cologne also has a planer for public transportation that gives you door-to-door instructions with time information.

Graham Hicks 10 Aug 05

For people in the SF Bay Area, there’s a public transportation trip planner at 511.org. I’ve not used it myself, but heard from people that it works fairly well.

Beau Hartshorne 10 Aug 05

Darrel: Thanks. Got a name for it? E-mail me (click on my name to get to my site).

Adam DuVander 10 Aug 05

Along the lines of bikes, I’ve wanted a site where I can find the best bike route, which might include most bike lanes, least stopping, and least elevation change.

I think previous comments have shown that public transportation organizations are doing a good job of trying to provide trip planners. In Portland, we have one.

How about integrating SMS into trip planning? Use the GPS inside the busses and we can find out what time a bus *will* arrive, not just when it is scheduled.

Ying Li 10 Aug 05

Boston MBTA has a good trip planner that gives you directions a la mapquest but with public transportation: http://trip.mbta.com/cgi-bin/index.pl

Emily 10 Aug 05

How to find a union printer, or good union services in general.

Carlos Moreno 10 Aug 05

also hard to find are houses that have spare rooms in them for someone to crash for a few days, matching up people who are visiting a college town, or got kicked out of their house, or just are needing a place to crash for a few days.

like a couch-surfing directory.

also combined w/ a service like this could possibly be roomates looking for eachother, not just for apartments, but also houses, etc.

Chris 10 Aug 05

It would be great if Google Maps (or some similar service) include elevation changes. Very handy for cyclists. In areas like Seattle or San Francisco a 4 mile flat route is much faster than a 1 mile hilly route. SF city put out a very nice paper map with roads color coded to indicate grade. Be nice to see that incorporated into an on-line tool for route planning.

Ben Schumacher 10 Aug 05

What are the top 10 major cites in the country? RTD has you covered in the Denver-metro area.

Dan Boland 10 Aug 05

Kottke just posted this: you can download subway maps to your iPod. Chicago, unfortunately, is not one of the cities (yet?). Pretty frickin’ cool, at any rate.

John Zeratsky 10 Aug 05

Dan: Yeah, that would be awesome to have for Chicago. *sighs*

Mark Sigal 10 Aug 05

As Graham Hicks alluded to, in the Bay Area there is 511.org. Here is a link to the trip planner:

511 TakeTransit Trip Planner

Huge utility and well designed from perspective of enabling user to give point A to B parameters, state either when need to leave or when need to arrive at destination, walking distance between transit points, etc. Use it whenever need to take the bus in SF.

Jonathan Holst 10 Aug 05

To follow up on what Rik said, Copenhagen offers a great route planner too called rejseplanen.dk

I use it all the time.

Jonathan Peterson 10 Aug 05

Figuring out walking time and cab fares isn’t that bad anymore. Check out the gmapPedometer that allows you to measure routes down to the Idon’tknowhowtiniest of an inch.

John Y. 10 Aug 05

Another public transportation site with route planning is Washington, D.C.’s (and vicinity): www.wmata.com. It lets you choose if you want to travel by rail only, bus only, or both, and also lets you choose between minimizing travel time or transfers. It’s pretty useful, although sometimes the response times are slower than I’d like — their server gets overloaded too frequently.

Andre Leistner 10 Aug 05

Métro is another public transport guide for Palm, PocketPC and other devices. It’s free and quite fun to use.

Nagita 10 Aug 05

A knowledgebase combined with some sort of email service that scans a customers email and provides them with a set of answers to questions that may be related and have the option of selecting and answer and cancelling the email or modifying the email and sending it. Similiar to how Google presents ads in GMail.

Web hosts use this to reduce the number of support emails.
However any business that has a longish sales timeline will speed up response to customes, have better answers etc.

Customer are looking for information presented clearly and in an easy-to-understand form.

Can this be a service like Gmail tied to a paid data storage for company knowledge.

David Mackay 10 Aug 05

I’m not so sure that being able to hear a product is going to help much. What kind of product did you have in mind? My feeling is that, without some kind of standard for recording levels and reproduction quality, a recording of a fridge door closing, a piano lid closing, and someone hanging up the phone are all going to sound the same.

Jeff Kenny 10 Aug 05

I’ll toss another in the mix for walking routes (or whatever your mode of transport might be). Walk. Jog. Run. - which is, as the site states “Simply put, it’s a running route planner and a distance/speed calculator.”

Mihira 10 Aug 05

@Faith: thanks for the tips. I’m impressed by how much content Judy’s Book has on little ol’ Ann Arbor.

Tony 11 Aug 05

A lot of laws (and regulations) are available online, but they aren’t necessarily in plain english. So, even if you know where to find them, you may not be the best person to interpret them. For instance, I happen to work for a legal publishing company, and have access to a great many federal, state, and municipal laws, regulations, and court decisions — nicely annotated and searchable on a system people (lawyers, judges, etc.) pay quite a bit to use, and I’ve yet to find anything that I would feel comfortable interpreting on my own.

Also, from the cross-section of laws and regulations I’ve seen, it seems to me the smaller the governing or administrative body, the more archane and verbose they tend to write. It’s as if they are trying to put on an air of having more power than they truly possess. A municiple code often reads like a verse of the King James Bible, with shalls and other old language used to excess; whereas federal regulations are often done in question and answer style (almost like an FAQ).

Sylvia 11 Aug 05

Adding to Graham Hicks comment, the 511.org Trip Planner in SF Bay Area works pretty well, giving the user a variety of options depending on how much you are willing to walk and how fast you want to get there. It even estimates the time it takes u to walk to and from public transportation stops. Check it out!
http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/index.asp

John Sullivan 11 Aug 05

The Boston MBTA trip planner is only so-so. It doesn’t, for example, include the bus stop right in front of my house, even though it’s on a major street. It’s got pretty big interface problems, like randomly requiring you to enter the street name in all caps before it will recognize it. And does it work well or at all on a mobile phone? Last time I tried it, no dice.

Today GMaps told me there was a Supercuts on a street that is clearly only residential, and has obviously been that way since before Supercuts existed. Bizarre.

I’d add some kind of interaction-with-government to the list. I remember last US presidential election day, the fact that it was an election day did not even make it on to my city’s web site, or even the state of Massachusetts’s web site. Much less, information about polling places and hours.

Valter 11 Aug 05

Here in Finland we have a fine solution to the public transportation problem, and it even works country-wide.

http://www.matka.fi/en/

For example, try going from Pailakantie 1 to Opera — Lapland to Helsinki in 16 hours.

I bet to differ on “A good plumber or electrician”. Yesterday I found myself in need of a plumber to fix a toilet shut-off volve, and using maps.google.com I zoomed into my town then typed ‘plumber’ to get a list of all the ones inmy area. Called one and within about 3 hours my toilet was flushing like new again :)

asdf 11 Aug 05

You can find out how long it takes to walk by getting the non-highway route using Mapquest, this will give you the # of miles. Armed with the speed at which you walk, you can get an estimate of how long it will take.

They could have you listen to something you know how loud it is supposed to sound. What? I don’t know yet..

The World Legal Information Institute (free, independent, not-for-profit), has laws (federal, state, local) and judicial decisions for a large number of countries:
www.worldlii.org

ramil 11 Aug 05

japan has a very good system for figuring out how to go from place A to B

An example is:

http://www.jorudan.co.jp/

enter a starting point, a destination and desired time of arrival and departure, and it presents you with several options (cheapest, fastest, etc). you can view the nearby hotels for the destination and weather reports for that day, as well as street maps.

(here’s the english site (less features): http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/norikae/e-norikeyin.html)

HollyQueen 11 Aug 05

I would love a listing of local bars and the types of music they play. I want to dance to some 70/80s stuff and I have no idea how to find any around Portland.

Wynn Williamson 12 Aug 05

Carlos Moreno mentioned couchsurfing. Here is what you are looking for.

www.couchsurfing.com

Also, there is some service that you pay to find plumbers and stuff in Tulsa - I think it is based on similar services in Boston and San Fran but I dont know them.

http://viphomeowners.com/

JohnnyLab 12 Aug 05

I love the plumbing/electrician bit. I know so many people that have had bad experiences with home repair, construction, and landscaping. Luckily I have friends and fam in the bus. And you know what? Only 2 out of 20 think they need a website (I’m a designer, LOL)…

You can find US federal and state laws online. I did a bunch of stuff without a lawyer using what was online or at the local library. There’s a catch… you have to understand the doc’s! The wording of documents is encrypted so only lawyers can understand it. Hey job security… FYI, I took some law classes in past.

Mary-Ann 12 Aug 05

I want to find independent mobile phone info, searchable if possible

Brad 12 Aug 05

A one-stop shop with links to all the online stores where you can find shoes and boots in size 14. Same goes for people with other hard-to-find sizes.

I tried “size14.com” but it turns out to be a porno site ;-)

Jeff 12 Aug 05

Locations of do-it-yourself car washes.

Phillip 12 Aug 05

I imagine that law is not available in plain language on unofficial sites due to the danger of becoming liable for legal advice. Incidentally, the worldlii link goes here http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/ for US Federal law.

Brad: Try www.zappos.com. I need wide sizes and found them easily there. all sorts of brands.

Gruntwilligar T. Honkenoffski 12 Aug 05

I would like to know where a person can take his Penguins for a bite to eat (good healthy food) in the major US cities.

Dylan Thomas 16 Aug 05

DC is pretty good about getting places. Taxis work on a zone system, so if you’re unsure, you plug the points into the Taxi Calculator:

http://citizenatlas.dc.gov/atlasapps/taxifare.aspx

For Bus/Metro/etc plug in start/end then pick by departure time/arrival time, fastest/least transfers, bus only/rail only/both:

http://wmata.com/

The Citizens Atlas allow you to make maps, find out about schools, and alot more. they even let you report potholes, street lights, etc.

http://about.dc.gov/

John Brandon 16 Aug 05

Maybe this exists already, but a *complete directory for cell phone numbers. I’m not even sure how anyone would create something like that. I know Verizon has one for their customers, but I’ve never seen anything very complete. I’d like to just look up a name and city and get the number (speaking of making things simple).

John Brandon 16 Aug 05

Another thing that comes to mind is whether everything should be online. I mean, how would it help me to know there’s a bike rack at the SuperAmerica in Cleveland when I live in Chicago? Also, things like knowing local bars and the music they play, or the local car washes - those things are not really categorical, are they? My local bar doesn’t have any theme music — it’s all different every night. The bar is not connected to e-mail or the Web, that’s why it’s a local bar and not Hooters. There seems to be less of a need for local info on the Web, not more. If I need a car wash, I go to the one up the street that’s been there for 20 years. Why do I need to know that there’s one in the next town over? If the goal is to get everything on the “Web 2.0” someday — you know, things like whether there are any slots left for shoes at the McDonalds playland — then I think we’re all in a great deal of trouble, and we’re never going to cure cancer or get the murder rate down. By the way, that last thing — can’t find it on the Web anywhere.

Calrion 18 Aug 05

Wow! That’s all I can say: wow! I always thought we were a bit behind the times, down under, but we actually have solutions to most of those problems. The local cab company has a price estimator, the main mapping site has a walking directions function, the public transport site also has a ‘journey planner’, a group of universities runs a legislation database, there’s a local computer store chain that lists real-enough-time stock quantities, and the yellow pages site isn’t too shabby (but I’d expect Spinners to rock at this, they don’t).

Ok, so I don’t know how something sounds, and we don’t have the bike rack thing (mostly we don’t have bike racks!); but we do have the Toilet Map!! Taxpayer dollars at work.

Dante 19 Aug 05

Things that are still hard to find online (but shouldn’t be)? Writeboard? ;-)

Karolyn 20 Aug 05

CARLOS: Try your local hostels. Their posting boards may not be online because they constantly change but if you are couchsurfing that often then maybe you use your local coffee shop’s free internet and you can find a hostel and posted will be kind locals willing to house you for a while. They even post jobs so you might be able to get your own place… I’m not being mean, I know people have a run of bad luck, and maybe this is a resource you or whoever can use. Also, I think when I was in school, the university had a matching service. And I know it’s a little outdated but the PAPER still has classifieds. :)

The already mentioned journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk also has the ability to set your “walking speed” and check, “I’d rather walk if it’s quicker” although I’d really like an “I’d rather walk if it’s even nearly the same speed” option!

Even though we’re down on options and settings at the moment!
