American Bungalow magazine (my current favorite periodical) has republished my post on their article “Bringing Back Stinesville.”

Since reading that article and posting about it here, I’ve visited Stinesville, and even started on a quest to buy a historic property in my hometown of Placerville, CA. I’m far, far away from ever being able to buy a home of my own there, but it’s become a goal I’m tacking to the top of my list. Being the change you want to see goes far beyond politics and societal pressures, it starts with our consumption and our landscape and our luxuries.

The folks at American Bungalow were also kind enough to send over a PDF of the article for everyone to read. (Although you should still pick up your own copy!) Find it at Whole Foods or a Borders near you.

Wow, that is really cool! I’d like to make the trip to Stinesville myself. Thanks for sharing.

Gold Country Represent! I’m originally from Auburn, CA (very close to Placerville) and I’d like to buy a historic building there someday too. So many of the gold country-era buildings are stunning. It’s nice to come from an area that is history-rich and it will be even nicer to help preserve some of it.

Matt, my brother and I were both born at Auburn Faith!

@SH perfect! I was too!

I’m in NYC right now, but long for the day when I can move back. Lots of my friends feel the same… we should all start a facebook group or something to coordinate the homecoming :P

I have you Auburn kids beat – I was raised in El Dorado, a scant mile or so away from P-ville. It’s always amazing to hear when people make it out of that place. It’s like a black hole for people. They go in, but they never make it out.

SH 20 Aug 08

You’re right, Tyson is rocking Poor Red’s street cred. (For the record, I grew up off Missouri Flat.)

Hey Sarah, did you go to El Dorado High? Never thought I would see Placerville mentioned on SvN. Best of luck to you!

SH 20 Aug 08

I didn’t, Drew, I was actually exported to Oak Ridge. But my brother went to Ponderosa and I knew many, many people who went to El Dorado.

Yes, all our high schools were named after fictional tv shows and country music stars.

Tamal 21 Aug 08

Ha! I grew up in Placerville as well, traveled the world and landed right back here (well, El Dorado Hills).

Next time you are out this way you should drop by one of our [the local Ruby community’s] coffee shop co-working sessions.

Drew 21 Aug 08

@Tamal there’s a Ruby community in Pville? Alright! I might like to stop by next time I’m in town. Where do you meet at?

Tamal 21 Aug 08

@Drew Not exactly Pville, but a little further down the road: http://ruby.meetup.com/132/

Looks like we have the EDC hangin’ out here. Poor Red’s – nice! Sarah, I too went to Oak Ridge back in the day {6th graduating class I believe?} – was living in Cameron Park at the time & also got exported. Like Tamal, I left {2 days post OR graduation} and am now back in EDH w/OR kids walking by my door on their way home. Full circle.
