A few months ago I posted about Patterns. Patterns is a great example of smart self promotion by R.BIRD, a package design agency out of New York.

They recently stepped it up a notch by turning their free Patterns reports into a book. You can now buy a 220-page full-color paperback or a PDF on their site. You can also purchase individual reports too.

I just got my copy and the book is really beautiful. Well done, R.BIRD.

It’s a great concept. My brother is CTO of marketing firm Kunocreative. He took his new found expertise on in-bound marketing and wrote a free pdf – Inbound Marketers Handbook. Not as pretty as Patterns, but just as useful. http://www.kunocreative.com/inbound-marketers-handbook

I’m glad to see that it’s not just the web industry that is turning to alternative promotion for their products, it always seemed weird to me that the out of the box thinking on stuff like this was confined to web startups and the like.

I thought the web industry WAS everybody’s alternative promotion of their product.

Not to mention incredibly obvious and clumsy attempts at viral marketing followed up by even more obvious and clumsy followups.

“You forgot the link stupid!”

“Okay, I’ll just cut and paste the same exact message with the link tomorrow.”

FTR my comment was sincere and later copied as spam.

@Erik R

What I was referring to was the fact that online businesses are usually the quickest to seek out innovative ways to promote their products, and that brick and mortar businesses are almost always confined to standard forms of advertising.
