New in Highrise: Twitter integration 37signals May 29

22 comments Latest by Brand Infection

Highrise is the best way to keep track of who you talked to, what was said, and what to do next. Twitter integration allows you to have an even better view of what’s on a person’s mind, what they’re saying right now, and what their current interests are.

Now you can check your previous communications history as well as what they are tweeting right now. Tweets are great conversation starters that show you’re paying attention to what’s going on in their world.

Here’s a video to show you how easy it is to add Twitter info for a contact:

We really hope you like this feature (and be sure to follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/37signals).

Great to see the integration of a 3rd party service. Your products are very open to use by others through APIs, but is this the first use of a 3rd party service inside one of your applications?

Either way – simple and useful implementation.

Tim 29 May 09

I’m suprised that you guys didn’t integrate in LinkedIn before Twitter.

Since it’s my impression that Highrise is meant to be used moreso by enterprise users – LinkedIn seems to be a better fit given that it’s the “professional business social networking tool”.

Nonetheless, still a nice and cool feature to have.

Just a small notice, don’t think the Twitterific icon is public domain. It’s probably a better idea to use another icon.

Adam Smith 29 May 09

Oh God, will someone PLEASE make a functioning iPhone client for Highrise? !????!!?

Tamim 29 May 09

I really don’t get why you guys integrated twitter. It absolutely makes no sense in Highrise. What do the last tweets of somebody tell me? Bad decision.

Pete 29 May 09

The icon you’re using for that panel in the sidebar isn’t Twitter’s, it’s Twitterrific. It’s IconFactory’s property and you can’t use it.

BradM 29 May 09

@Pete I was expecting you to end your comment with “Licked it stamped it no erasing!” Maybe they had permission to use it but then again, maybe not. What do you care? Great feature BTW .

Re: the icon… That was my mistake. The actual product uses the “T” from Twitter, not the bird icon. We changed that within a few hours of launching.

Gerry Brooks in Canfield, OH is gonna be pissed that you posted his phone number. lol.

@Adam, I get the feeling 37signals may be working on it. Only time will tell.

@Tim, regarding Twitter vs. LinkedIn or other networks, I agree with you in the long term. Short term, Twitter makes sense. Twitter is a viable business tool. Corporate giants and small companies have people and systems dedicated to monitoring Twitter for tweets about their services and products. Over time though, Twitter is going to loose out to sites like LinkedIn and Facebook because of the depth of personal and network information available in those products and the ability to focus discussions (e.g. groups).

Here’s the trending topics on Twitter right now: #liesboystell #liesgirlstell #3wordsaftersex BGT #twistory #thingsmummysaid #3breakupwords Hulu Desktop Bing Twave

Twitter is fun and good and yummy like candy. It’s less and less relevant as a place of business discussion.

Of all the things to integrate. Twitter? Why not Linkedin?

Matt Lincoln Russell 29 May 09

Twitter is one service that I actually feel good about taking the time to integrate into my sites. It’s nice to see you guys agree.

Murp 29 May 09

@Steven Because LinkedIn tells you zero about a person’s REAL interests, personality, and state of mind - things that are vital to relationship management. LinkedIn is a sterile resume, nothing more.

Happy 29 May 09

@Murp: I guess it just all depends on what relationships you’re managing and how those people use each toolset. Here’s some snippets (with names changed to fictional names and commentary added in []) from my daily LinkedIn updates that I find packed full of useful info on an ongoing basis.

Would this recent tweet info be made available through the Highrise API ?

Steven 29 May 09

@Murp and @Happy: I see a powerful way to possibly match all the people in our HR account with their Linked In profile and find connections to each other.

Maybe the API ’s will not allow it but we have 2,000 people in our HR system so I feel that there has to be some connections (Linkedin) in there that we haven’t made yet. That would add value to the app that no other CRM system has right now…

JF 30 May 09

We’ll be exploring other integrations with 3rd party services including Linked In. We did Twitter first because it just took a couple hours and it’s something we all use.

I can’t find a general 37signals support email or support forum for the Getting Real book so I’ll report this here.

I just bought the physical book from Lulu.com. Each page of the purchasing process (and there were plenty of steps) took at least 10 seconds to render. Please look into it.

Also, delete this off topic comment. Thanks ;-)

Twatter 01 Jun 09

@Murp: The same thing could be said about Twitter. Twitter is a poor representation of someone’s personality and state of mind, regardless of how much you enjoy their tweets.

Brand Infection 03 Jun 09

Wondering why you don’t tie Highrise and Basecamp more closely together. That would be a lot more useful than the twitter integration.

Happy 04 Jun 09

@Brand Infection: Twitter in Highrise… 2 hours. Basecamp and Highrise…. slightly more than 2 hours.

Brand Infection 04 Jun 09

@Happy: Yes indeed. I’m just wondering if a BC/HR integration is coming along sometime. Would be very handy!
