From the archives… It’s always fun to stumble onto old work when you’re reorganizing your folders. This was the summary page from the E-Commerce Search Report [PDF] we did back in 2003. I think we sold close to 1000 of these PDF reports at $79 a pop. I think this was our first foray into selling self-published PDFs. It paved the way for us to self publish Getting Real as a PDF 3 years later. (I designed the report in InDesign, for those who are curious)

$79,000? That’s an inspiring number. It’s an impressive report, and looks like it was well worth the money.
I’m curious, how long did it take for you to put the report together?

DM, I don’t remember how long it took. SU (first commenter), do you remember? A few weeks of heavy site testing?

I LOVED that design. Totally loved it. Back then I was doing a lot of usability testing & user research consulting and always tried to emulate that clean visual style on the reports I’d hand to clients.
I think everybody who remembers seeing that back in the day should hop on this comment thread and relive some old times :)

Interesting material, and a beautiful design.
How did you guys go about marketing the report, and what sort of people were buying it?

Jason, you must have sold this for well after 2003.
I notice Backpack, Basecamp and Ta-da List are on the last page, but they didn’t launch until ‘04 (or ‘05?).
Nice work, though.
