His real inspiration is the economic growth and development of China.
He started doing this to highlight the social problems caused by development there. In fact, he started after the artist colony he lived in was demolished to make room for other things to spruce up the city for the arrival of the Olympics.
Sad to see his important message get lost with the praise.

There’s a TV commercial I recently saw that is using this approach. Some kind of drug…anti-depressant maybe. Anyway, they do exactly this only with motion/morphing. Pretty nifty effect.
