I don’t really think it’s an either/or thing. You’ve got to focus on doing your own thing really well, but you have to pay attention to what the competition is (or isn’t) doing too. It’s a bit arrogant to think you can’t learn anything from your competitors and if you ignore them, you don’t learn. Of course that’s not the same as worrying about them.

David Andersen: I think the quote does not tell us not to learn from our competitors but rather to focus on your business instead of losing time on thinking about what the competitors are doing. The key to success is “remain focused on our business and stop bothering about what the others are doing”. At least this is how I understand the quote.
