In a way, only caring what his colleagues think about what he does is even more elitist.

What if he just said, I don’t really care either way, but thanks for recognizing my work like this. I don’t take it that seriously but I appreciate you elevating me to the status that even Joe Schmo will have heard about my work.

Prize money ain’t bad, either. Wonder if he cashed the check.

There is a lot of cynicism toward Mr. Feynman’s comments, it seems. This is unfortunate as I believe he had a firm grasp on the value of his contribution to history, and he was clearly a great physicist. The Feynman Lectures audio boxed set is one of my favorite things to read on long road trips, believe it or not.
