Gorgeous. They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to. (Not to say there’s no fine architecture out there nowadays; most of my favorites are pretty modern, but once in a while an old classic like this can stop you in your tracks.)

The saddest part is after this last project Louis Sullivan died an alcoholic poor and alone.

I wonder if it’s something with the gifted artist/designer, so close to brilliance, but also prone to drinking? Think of writers like F. Scott Fitzgerald, or Hemingway.

Frank Lloyd Wright also nearly lost everything, for different reasons, and actually spent a few nights in a Minnesota jail I believe. He left for Japan at one point to repair his career, and it was very impressive, when there was a tremendous earthquake, and subsequent fire in Tokyo, that his hotel was still standing.

Wanted to let fans of Louis Sullivan and architecture know about a hidden treasure. There is a sizable exhibit dedicated to Louis Sullivan and his work located at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Lovejoy Library. The University maintains one of the largest collections of salvaged ornamentation. If you’re in southern Illinois anytime, be sure to check it out.

see http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/cdm4/index_sie_arch.php?CISOROOT=/sie_arch for more.
