Summer internships at 37signals Jason F. Mar 23 2011

20 comments Latest by thinkdj

For the first time we’re looking to bring on two interns this summer. We’ve always wanted to explore internships, but we never really had the space to make it happen. Now that we have our own office, it’s go time.

The summer internships are paid ($3000/month) and last ~3 months. You must live in Chicago or be willing to relocate to Chicago for duration of the internship. For those who haven’t been to Chicago in the summer, it’s a beautiful place to be.

Designer Internship

We’re looking for a student who wants to work on real design projects this summer at 37signals. The projects will involve designing user interfaces for web apps and/or marketing sites for these web apps. You’ll design, write copy, and be thoughtfully mentored by the design team at 37s. Apply for the designer internship.

Programmer Internship

We’re looking for a student who wants to work on real programming projects this summer at 37signals. The projects will involve using Ruby, Rails, and JavaScript. You’ll develop applications from scratch and/or work on existing applications while being thoughtfully mentored by the programming team at 37s. Apply for the programmer internship.

I think most of students would work for 37signals for free, it’s nice that this is a paid internship.

No mention of international interns?

No mention of international interns

Since this is our first time offering internships we’re likely going to stick with US only this year unless someone really blows us away.

Jason 23 Mar 11

Is there an age limit?

Jacob 23 Mar 11

Do you prefer if the intern is either a guy or girl?

Craig 23 Mar 11

It seems that almost any intern you choose will put everything into it…why else would you want to be an intern?

JF 23 Mar 11

Craig: We hope they will put everything into it, but not everyone starts at the same level or is interested in learning the same things.

Adrien Jarthon 23 Mar 11

That’s a very great offer ! i’ll love to apply if i was leaving near chicago ;) I hope you’ll find great people to power your great company !

@Vojto -

Not paying these interns would be illegal as in order for an internship to be unpaid, 37signals would need to “derive no immediate advantage” from the work being done.

Granted, even the US Congress violates this policy.

James 23 Mar 11

Would you consider someone with 3 or 4 years experience in .NET and Java but who is new to Ruby/Rails and is interested in learning business skills as well as programming?

Jay 23 Mar 11

Is there a start/end date posted for these opportunities? :)

JF 23 Mar 11

Jay: We’re keeping it a bit open ended to work around different schedules. “Summer” is as specific as we can get.

Zack Shapiro 23 Mar 11

This is an incredible opportunity. I just applied. Can’t wait to hear back from you guys. It would be an honor to learn from and work for 37signals!

Chet L 24 Mar 11

Wow, what a fantastic surprise! I’m quite excited to put my application together – it is go time indeed.

The internship descriptions seemed to be (intentionally) a bit ambiguous as far as educational background or other prerequisites. Are there specific skills or areas of coursework that would increase our chances or bar us from applying?

jazzy 24 Mar 11

@vazzyb why would anyone work for free? its the same logic why 37s does not give its products for free. infact 3000$ is pretty less considering the current market(even at startups).

jazzy 24 Mar 11

looking at some of the above comments, maybe i am wrong. to each man his own.

Joseph 24 Mar 11

Too bad i’m not a designer. Working at 37 signals would be really cool i guess

Anonymous Coward 25 Mar 11

What, no biz dev guy internships?

Anonymous but only slightly coward 25 Mar 11

Permission to get creative with our application ;) ?

Adam 28 Mar 11

Echoing Chet L, are you considering self taught design students?

thinkdj 30 Mar 11

Damn! If only I were in the US right now…
