This weekend during the Ravenswood Art Walk, I visited Lorna’s Laces. They hand-dye yarns in some really beautiful color combinations. I took some photos to share, because sometimes it’s nice to look at pretty things!
Designers, how do you put colors together? Where do you find inspiration?
Bonus points: can you think of a better name for a colorway than Zombie BBQ?
(That’s a trick question. There is no better name than Zombie BBQ.)

Color inspiration for me is all about mood and story.

I love finding pictures online and passing them through a color palette generator.

I’ve been struggling with this all day. I started using http://colorschemedesigner.com/, but while it helps, it’s hard to pick one that even a minority of the users like. I’d love to hear more on how you do it at 37signals.

I’m partially color blind so sites like http://colourlovers.com really help me out.
But you guys can we really just have a moment of silence for whoever the hell came up with “Zombie BBQ ”? That’s some next-level naming right there.

Go outside, take a photo with a nice range of tones. Extract the color palette.
I was about to post the photoshop route to do this, but it seems doing it online could be much easier: http://www.cssdrive.com/imagepalette/
Nature does a fantastic job of providing well-matched colours.

Check out a copy of Interaction of Colors by Josef Albers at your local library. (You’ll probably want to do this before plunking down $120 for the one with the color plates).

Looking at the world around to get inspiration is an ideal way to get to a desired look and feel. I usually look at birds (I Google for them) and get colors from their feathers (which are indeed beautiful).
Thanks for these inspirational images. They are really lively and lovely.

I like Adobe Kuler. (http://kuler.adobe.com) It’s free for desktop, and they just came out with an Android app that works with your device’s camera.

Zombie BBQ color combination reminds me of one I did on a student color assignment I had while in art school. My teacher complemented that not everyone can pull off a great red-green combination. I just wish I had called my piece Zombie BBQ !
