Questions for Harris, Weskamp, Koblin chat? May 18 2007
10 comments Latest by Felipe Gomes
Our next Fireside Chat (on Tuesday) will bring together three innovative designer/artists who build engaging interactive experiences:
Jonathan Harris (Daylife, We Feel Fine, etc.)
Aaron Koblin (The Sheep Market, Flight Patterns, etc.)
Marcos Weskamp (Flickrgraph, Newsmap, etc.)
What question(s) would you like to see us ask them?

i would like to know how they use all the services together as a productivity suite. i have tried to do this with my staff in Buenos Aires, and it seems a bit complicated, i’m fine, but they have trouble. Any advice with the instruction of staff?
Thanks.

Well, for Aaron Koblin, i guess I would want him to know that he fucking rocks.

but seriously folks,
Aaron, we currently have methods to via the internet present large amounts of text information, html. and we have it for data, in xml. what work is being done in being able to present graphical information online. for example how could you possibly present the FAA flight info data in a browser realtime for the web? Is there anyone working on that sort of thing?

realizing that svg is there and supposedly its being built in natively to the browsers but. and that there has been some decent work done in flash.

I’m not quite sure how to phrase these questions, but I’d like to see the interview touch on something like:
Do the “engaging interactive experiences” that you create lead to paying engagements directly with people who see the work and want to hire you based on that?
Has the exposure you’ve gotten from creating these works caused people to contact you to collaborate on other projects? If so, any examples to share?

Also, can you identify one thing each of you has done to promote your work that has exposed it to a larger/wider audience more than anything else? (or, What has been the most effective means of promotion for your online work?)

This is probably phrased very badly,
what narrative structures are only available to interactive design? what are some interesting examples you’ve seen, what work in this area are you particularly interested in?

i have one for Jonathan Harris actually.
Can you compare displaying data using java/Processing with flash/AS3? And if yes, some details on pros and cons on both technology would be much appreciated.
The reason i’m asking this is because wefeelfine seems to use Processing and lovelines uses flash. Maybe it’s just down to personal preference. :)

I have to second Alvin on that request. I’d love to know Harris’s thoughts on Processing v. AS3 .

On a more generic question: in their opinion, does the presence of tools focused on information vis/interaction like processing stimulates the creativity when doing new experiments? or are the experiments generally thought independently of the tool, and they are used just as a mean of getting the projects implemented?
