The Deck turns 21 Jason F. Sep 04 2007

We’re happy to announce the addition of three new sites to our targeted ad network, The Deck. This brings the total number of affiliated sites to 21 and also brings a wealth of talent and smarts to the network too.

Darius Monsef’s COLOURlovers has taken a simple and critical part of design and grown it into a thriving destination for the discussion and analysis of colors, palettes, theory and meaning. Veerle Pieters’s site has always been a great resource for illuminating examples of layout, code and above all, impeccable taste. Our third new affiliate is A Brief Message, a concept developed by Khoi Vinh and Liz Danzico that aims to become the “Op-Ed” page for design on the web, by publishing short weekly commentary on matters that matter.

If you have a product or service that could benefit from being in front of millions of web, design and creative pros each month, ping us at The Deck. Limited inventory is available for the fall.

So, where do I go for apply for being another site on the list?

I’m a bit confused about The Deck. The site says:

We won’t take an ad unless we have paid for and/or used the product or service. Sell us something relevant to our audience and we’ll sell you an ad.

—Yet some of the sites featured are blogs and there is no product or service per se. Does that mean that Khoi Vinh and John Gruber (to name two) are actually paying to get their sites in front of millions of web, design and creative pros each month?

P.S. Kudos on this commenting system turning two hyphens into an em dash.

John, we’re talking about the ads themselves. Daring Fireball is a site that runs the ads, it’s not an ad. Daring Fireball is a publisher, not an advertiser.

Jason,

That seems kind of obvious now! Sorry, it’s been a long day…

Congratulations; building your own ad network like that may be difficult, but it’s a smart move. Web 2.0 has made us forget all over again that advertising is partly about making money and partly about credibility, and grabbing the low-hanging fruit (i.e. Adwords) doesn’t usually contribute to either.

Looking at these logos, congratulations on landing W Hotels, a font, Canada and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
