Today we welcome Mark Imbriaco to the 37signals crew. Mark will serve as our first system administrator. Up until now sys admin duties have been shared by David and Jamis. Now we can have someone dedicated to the task of security, performance, set-up, and server health. This also frees up our programmers to program and not worry about infrastructure as much.

Mark lives with his family in Virginia. We’ve always preferred to hire the best and brightest no matter where they are. Limiting yourself to your geographic region leaves a lot of talented people behind.

Mark’s history includes Senior Sys Admin duties at AOL and Bank of America. He’s dealt with server clusters stacked with hundreds of machines, so we’re pretty sure he can handle our measly 15.

Mark is also a talented Ruby programmer so we look forward to having him help out there as well.

So, welcome aboard Mark! We’re very excited to have you.

Yay, a sys admin! That’s gotta be a very welcome addition to 37signals. Greetings Mark!

Only 29 to go…

Paolo Marcucci 22 Sep 06

Well, let’s not forget his work on the magical www.dumphock.com website… :)

Excellent! While I’m sure David didn’t mind doing some sys admin stuff, I know of that one 72 hour period a few months ago he would like to forget. And giving more time to program means more awesomeness to come!

Congrats Mark! 37Signals seems like a cool place to work at.

Way to go Mark! See you at the next TWRUG meeting!

Congradulations Mark, now you can tell people who you work for at cocktail parties and they’ll not only have no idea who you’re talking about they won’t hate you for some bad experiance their aunt’s brother had with the bank or something.

In the words of Napoleon Dynamite… LUCKY!

Congratulations, Mark! Surely, it must be a great feeling. :)

Hi,

Congrats to 37signas and Mark.

Could you explain a little bit hardware and software setup that Mark must manage?

Thanks.

Hopefully 37Signals turns out better than iTRiBE did, eh Mark?

Congrats Mark - I bet you have a great time working for 37S.

Hearty Congrats to all at 37Signals as you continue your growth! “D”

Congrats Mark! See if you can speed up this blog — submitting comments takes forever (not to mention the duplicates)!

That’s because Moveable Type is dog slow.

We’ve already built our own blogging software that will make posts/comments/etc near instant, we just have to roll it out. Maybe next week or the week after. It’s just for our own internal use, it won’t be a product we’re going to sell.

Thanks for all the votes of confidence, to say that I’m excited to be working at 37signals would be a massive understatement. Jamis and David have done a super job keeping everything running so I have a great platform to build on for our future growth.

warren 22 Sep 06

JF, do you know what makes Movable Type so slow? congrats to mark also (i know i’m late to this).

Don Schenck 22 Sep 06

*sigh* Once again Jason passes by me and picks someone else.

:)

Just curious: if Mark works remotely, who does the actual work of getting the servers, connecting them up and so on (assuming that the data center is not in Virginia, but in Chicago). Reason I am asking is this is an issue we are grappling with - remote sysadmin with a rapidly expanding data center …

Elle 22 Sep 06

Congrats Mark - nice to see the rest of the world recognises your awesomeness :)

Our servers are hosted and managed by Rackspace. They are in charge of the hardware.

Do you not use Tilted for your servers?

Matt 23 Sep 06

Tim— They recently changed. This was big news a few weeks ago. I believe they were still happy with, but were just outgrowing, Tilted, and as far as I know they still recommend Tilted.

Hunter 23 Sep 06

Rackspace are incredible. We’ve been a customer for 4 years and I can’t say enough good things about their service.

Andrew 23 Sep 06

If that is the case, I guess they forgot to change the “Hosted excellently by Tilted” link at the bottom?

Ed Harshberger 23 Sep 06

Congrats Mark! It’s great to see 37 growing and bringing on even more talented folks.

Jason 23 Sep 06

Congrats Mark!

Maybe one of your early blog entries could be about the software stack and system setup you guys use. There isn’t much information in the wild about what is being used by the “big boys”. I’ve only seen one good article (series) about it and it was in the frame of a conversion.

Not even to pull a RoR and open-source it? :(

Release aside, I’m looking forward to seeing that rolled out.

Adam 23 Sep 06

Allowing employees to work from wherever they live not only gives you access to the best workers, but makes them happier. Not everyone likes to pick up and move for every new job. Well done!

Anonymous Coward 23 Sep 06

Congratulations, Mark!

JF 23 Sep 06

Not even to pull a RoR and open-source it?

No because it just does the absolutely bare minimum completely customized for our specific needs. It’s not in any shape for anyone else to use/see it.

basil 25 Sep 06

once again, ladies and gentlemen, a member of MHBOCP puts Hampton Roads on the Internet map.

37s has no clue how lucky THEY are to get Mark.

Clayton Hynfield 27 Sep 06

Congratulations to you, Mark, and to the entire 37signals team!

It’s consolation to learn I was beaten out by someone with such impressive experience. If there’s anything you ever need a temporary underling forwell, the Gig Board will go in my newsreader on launch day.

Best regards.

Brock, I’m glad to see that you are working with the new hotness. Do your thing bro.
