Experience design at Nokia Matt 10 Jul 2006

New levels of Experience Design is an interview with Liisa Puolakka, the Head of Brand Visual and Sensorial Experiences at Nokia. The former fashion designer talks about fashion, trends, why experience design matters, and who’s doing it well (her answer: Prada, Marc Jacobs, Nike, Starbucks, and Apple).

Even today my work is still very much involved in understanding and recognising trends and the way people or societies are changing…The main thing is to start with an understanding of the user, the consumer, and the life they are living. Of course most designers do that intuitively, even if they don’t realise it, but within Nokia there are specialists who do that research in a more methodical way.

Some interesting images accompany the piece, including original sketches of the Nokia 7600 and L’Amour alongside the real deals.

it was this article that prompted me to buy the Nokia 7360 for my wife… who now has the coolest cell phone in all of atlanta.

especially love the ‘yoga coach’ software that comes installed on the phone.

Jason McMinn 10 Jul 06

I think Nokia has some of the worst industrial designers in the phone space. If you look at their phone lineup, you will see constant re-working of the same boring phones and see nothing innovative.

They move the number keys around in weird configurations and call it cutting edge design.

Andrew Knott 10 Jul 06

Now if only they could put some thought into designing the user interface…

Plus, you know, Nokia’s phones aren’t that ‘usable’ as pieces of hardware. I’m not sure a designer with a fashion heritage is the right choice for designing user experience for gadgets… Prada and Apple aren’t doing the same thing when they design.

I was a nokia user for many years, but their new designs are just crazy - some of them hardly resemble phones at all! It was a sad day when my 6110 finally packed in and I had to move to a different brand to find something I liked.

J 10 Jul 06

I’d love to see a review of the new Nokia N80. The industrial design looks nice.

Kingsley Joseph 10 Jul 06

In usability tests that I conducted a few years ago in India, Nokia had the best usability for basic tasks, and better discoverability of advanced tasks than most phones. Their industrial design could be better, but then their best phones (and I don’t count the 7360 among them) hardly ever make it to the US. I don’t think they’ve taken a serious crack at winning the US market, and if Motorola spent as much on UI as they do on industrial design, they could carry this market with the same network effects that have made Nokia a practical monopoly everywhere else.

The Nokia’s I’ve used have been far more usable than any Sony’s, Motorola, or other brands I’ve tried. Unbelievably easy access to the phone/address book and their shortcut number codes to deep within the menu system are evidence enough that Nokia thinks a lot about how their phones are used.

That being said, I have no idea why anyone would be interested in a phone that has the number/txt keys arranged in circles, split in two, or some other incredibly-hard-to-use-with-one-hand configuration.

Jack Straw 10 Jul 06

Targeted marketing at its worst (best?). The images that accompany that article are just cliche buzz images (‘Designer’ with the thick rimmed glasses, a ‘sketchbook’ with newspaper article collages. My girlfriend made those in high school. This is the phone equivalent of a really hackneyed threadless shirt.

Interesting comment

“The main thing is to start with an understanding of the user, the consumer, and the life they are living”

What type of user would use this phone? Can anyone tell?

To be honest it looks like a coaster. And if its like their other phones it’ll probably end up where all coasters end up…in the trash.

Focus on your UI and make that the “Experience”. Your software is slow, bloated and you’ve been in the market for too long to be that way.

Hire 37 signals to help you out on the UI : )

pwb 10 Jul 06

Nokia is definitely *not* an entity that I would look to for either stylish or functional design.

And can someone please explain to me why phone manufacturers do not use the exceedingly superior input device, the scroll wheel?

Ryan Allen 10 Jul 06

The L’Amour phones are awesome. I have one of them. They’re really well designed pieces of hardware.

The only thing that falls short of the overall design is the UI. It’s a bit, ack. There are some things that are lacking in the way you do things… (But I’m still very happy with it).

I second (or third or fourth) that Nokia hire 37s to work on a phone UI!

Alan 10 Jul 06

I’m surprised at the positive comments here with respect to Nokia software usability. I find my Nokia frustrating and the navigation system confusing and half-hazard. Basic interactions are not well thought out.

For instance, it’s difficult to use the voice-activated voice note feature while driving, because after it recognizes the voice tag that’s supposed to open the voice note recorder, you have to press a specific key on the keypad, which necessitates having to pull the phone away from your ear and look at the phone. You then have to press another specific key after you’re finished speaking your voice note, which requires looking at the phone again. What is the point of having a voice tags feature if it doesn’t really reduce the amount of keystroke-based interaction you have to do with the phone?

Similarly, the red “cancel/back” button doesn’t behave consistently. Sometimes it goes to back to the previous level menu, sometimes it goes directly back to the home screen. The specific behavior depends on where you are in the phone’s menus or what application/tool you’re running. In the web minibrowser on my phone, the “cancel” button jumps to my service provider’s home screen, and there’s no way of getting out of the minibrowser without pressing the “off” button on the top of the phone once. You can also get there by holding down the red button for a couple seconds, but that feature is not discoverable. I had to find it in the manual. There may be a couple other buttons with different behaviors when you hold them down for a couple seconds, but I have no way of knowing short of going back through the manual.

And don’t get me started on the usability of the alarm clock application….

Nokia does seem to have excellent industrial designers, but their software is frustrating.

Bryan C 12 Jul 06

I think phone designers are getting really bored. There are only so many practical ways to arrange a number pad, a screen, and a few navigation buttons, and they figured out the optimal size and placement of all those things years ago. Now they’re just trying to look busy.

Phone UI doesn’t get the attention it deserves because no one but the user really experiences it, and most users don’t have any better alternatives. The day Motorola or Nokia starts running photos of their screen displays and competing on usability instead of shape of a plastic case is the day we’ll see some real progress.

My current phone (provided by my employer) is a Motorola/Nextel. The UI is one of the worst I’ve used. The special purpose buttons for the walkie-talkie feature are thoughtfully arranged, but everything else is just sort of tossed together at random under obscure menus.

Phil K 12 Jul 06

It’s pretty, but that keypad looks thoroughly broken.

The normal 10-key layout is a very well established convention. You can enter a number with your thumb, or your fingers, or both, and it only takes one hand.

In contrast, the keypad pictured appears to REQUIRE two hands to dial.

pwb 12 Jul 06

We can only hope that Apple joins the party. Given the Razr’s extraordinary success despite being a fairly normal phone, this would be a big opportunity for Apple.

Ed S. 14 Jul 06

I agree with Jason McMinn and Andrew Knott… Fashion Design != User Experience Design.

They need to stop messing with the number pad. It’s pretty much a set industry standard… and that’s a good thing. Dialing from my office phone, my home phone, and taking money out of the ATM are all the same experience.

This “new level of experience design” shouldn’t mean, “Let’s make the user learn a new paradigm of number arrangement… forget about the one that has worked for decades.”

I’ve owned a nokia phone for a while. The numbers not lining up always annoyed me and threw me off sometimes. And two numbers on one button? Gimme a break. Try doing that on an ATM.
