Our new book REMOTE: Office Not Required is now available in stores. Like REWORK, this is a book that’s been more than a decade in the making.
I started working remotely with Jason from Copenhagen, Denmark way back in 2001, by responding to a post on this very blog about programming. Since then we’ve grown our company to 41 people with 30 of them living and working from outside of Chicago. (I’m writing this from Malibu, California). We’ve built Basecamp, Ruby on Rails, and many other products and projects together as a remote company. This book contains all that we’ve learned and the reasons why this new way of working is ready for prime time.
It’s not just about making work better, though. It’s as much about making life better. As our employees will tell you, the flexibility and the freedom that comes from remote work is liberating and a real boost to quality of life. The world has made such great leaps in terms of productivity, and it’s time we spent some of those spoils making our work-life balance better.
So please enjoy this book. It’s been an absolute pleasure to write it. We can’t wait to hear what you think about it. Thank you for reading.

Looking at the book cover, when did you become a “founder of 37 signals”.
You came long after Jason, Carlos and Ernest “founded” 37 signals back in 1999.
It’s this a blant lie. Shouldn’t it say that your a partner.

on 30 Oct 13Dana, 37signals has two phases. The web design company that designed stuff for clients from 1999-2004, and the software company that created Basecamp, Highrise, Campfire, etc from 2004-present. We’re using the term to describe that second phase of the company.

on 30 Oct 13I don’t normally read these types of books, but I read about REWORK about half a year ago, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I think of myself as a book person, so I can be fairly snobby at times about books. What impressed me about REWORK was its writing style: clear and elegant, and in possession of a distinctive personal voice. While I’m not a programmer or designer - I wish! - my eyes begin to glaze whenever the discussions get too technical; yet I now find myself one of the many who use their computers to earn a living. (I teach online for various colleges.) REMOTE is a book I’ve been looking forward to for some months now. I can’t help but think there’ll be both ideas and encouragement within its covers. Yes, I plan on purchasing the physical version of this book, since I’m also very good at spilling coffee on things electronic.

on 30 Oct 13I bought the book yesterday and read it in around 2.5 hours and it is great. Having made the jump to being a remote worker myself a few years ago, the book still had plenty of good insights and tips that I had not thought of.
If your someone trying to convince a boss/owner to explore working remotely, I suggest giving them this book along with “Who moved my cheese” by Spencer Johnson. Both books combined could be just enough to get the light bulb to turn on in their head.

Can you suggest a book or guide to go through when I’ve finished Remote that goes into more technical stuff? Thanks!

on 31 Oct 13Thank you for this awesome release – I had it on pre-order for a long time now. The thing is I know all of it already – a lot from experience and we need to share it with the people who don’t know yet and need to be coerced. Can you think of an easy way I can buy additional items for people as gifts – managers, CEOs, who need to be convinced to try this way of working? Getting a kindle version is not an ideal option, even with their cloud reader, I guess I’d need something that they can read online, or w/o any expectations of what platforms and software they use. I am probably thinking a browser based EPUB reader or something similar, so that I can share it easily…

on 04 Nov 13I’ve read Rework and Getting Real with big pleasure and now I’m excited about new 37signals’s book. Unfortunately it’s impossible to buy it in Russian iBookStore. It would be so cool to have an opportunity to read Remote on iBooks worldwide not only in US AppStore (yes, I know about kindle and use this application but nothing is better than iBooks).

on 04 Nov 13I got my book and I am half way through it. Love it! I quit my job about a year ago and have had to learn how to work remotely. It was hard in the beginning, but now it’s awesome. The other thing is that I am looking to move to another country with my family, but my business has to work as smoothly as if i were still here. Having a “Remote” mindset forces me to look at everything that I do and try to outsource, delegate and systemize. I have to look at weak links in my Remote plan and adjust or eliminate these things. It’s been a wonderful experience and your book helps in the process. Thanks again!
