Is this the old Crate & Barrel photo studio location? Fantastic space! Can’t wait to see it get the 37signals treatment…

Those, the gods want to destroy they first drive mad.

No tour of the bathroom? That’s one of the most important things about an office! Everyone hates our bathroom. It is a heavy contributor to employee dissatisfaction.
Nic09 Mar 10
A day or two back I was wondering what’s happened to your friendship with Coudal. Name dropping and mention of shared office space, etc seems to have quietly disappeared. I just didn’t know where to aks the question. Thanks for giving me a place!
JF09 Mar 10
Nic, we’re as strong with Coudal as we’ve ever been. They’ve been busy with their stuff, we’ve been busy with ours.
We just finished working closely with them on the REWORK book trailers too. They filmed and produced the spots and we collaborated on the plotlines.
All is good in that world, we just need some privacy as do they. It’s time for us to move on. They’ve been wildly gracious hosts and we’ve been renting a corner of their office for 7 years. Coudal is class, through and through.
Looks like a fairly old building so I’m guessing great value for money.
Pity the windows are not floor to ceiling…
Alexander T.09 Mar 10
Waiting for postman to bring in Rework! I’ve still not gotten over Getting Real, so please let me offer you any murals you might need for the new office space. One of the companies I opened online after reading Getting Real was this, so I’d love to give something back – especially to the ones that influenced me, its theirs too!
Berserk09 Mar 10
Nice. Lot of potential (in a good way) in such a space. What direction is the main windowed wall facing?
Why is it that as soon as you posted this footage of what looks like a very cool office space (and “Full story, floor plans, and vision shortly”) people immediately started to post reasons why it wouldn’t work/wasn’t right/is too big/etc? :S
Bryan Sebastian09 Mar 10
Looks like a great space. Is it somewhere down by Fulton Street? As mentioned above, I am hoping that some of the size is due to having classes and workshops. It would be very interesting if you also did some type of co-working space rental where people can rent a desk for a day, by the month or get a 10 day pass. I would definitely be interested in something like that. Would that be considered a “by product”?
Dave!09 Mar 10
Looks full of potential! Can’t wait to see the plans for it…
The graffiti on those 2 walls is pretty nice. It might be interesting to somehow keep that and incorporate it into the new decor, hold on to a bit of the buildings history.
Jumping Jesus on a pogostick! That place is huge! What happened to “smaller is better” ...? You could build a skate park in there. Good luck with whatever you’re planning to do to fill that space.
I’m looking forward to hearing how you plan on using the space. My employer’s looking at moving, so it’ll definitely be interesting to see how 37signals uses an office.
I think they’re building a home for everyone inside that space, so the employees still can work from home, but are close enough to interact face-to-face from time to time.
Paul10 Mar 10
Right upstairs from Goodwill! I’ll be under you-all a lot then.
Lennart10 Mar 10
Don’t forget to consider the acoustics while planning the reconstruction.
Adam Wood10 Mar 10
I want nothing more than to be a part of this awesomeness.
Nice work, Jason. Really brilliant to wait as long as possible before making this move. Too many do this way too early, costing them too much money and locking them into a “way”, if you will, of working.
That’s a very nice place, and very large. I wanna see it when it’s really done. The location is really good. No matter what you’ll do with that place I’m sure it will turns out great.
Steve R.13 Mar 10
This is like the old car ads from the 1950’s and 60’s – car under sheet, you were dying to know what they looked like – except all we get is a huge, wonderful space and a promise.
I submit to your marketing ploy and confess that I am dying to know what you are planning, and will come back to find out.
There, happy? :)
PS – Would you be willing to disclose ‘buy’ or ‘rent’ ? I would love even more to see what you did with your own space, versus what you had to accept from a landlord.
I see “Rework Workshops” coming in the near future. Name your price, I’ll be there.

That’s an awesome space, but isn’t it a bit big for a company that works remotely the majority of the time?
bruno Miranda 09 Mar 10
Beautiful space, very large. Can’t wait to see what you guys do with it.
Good Luck!
Jeff Mackey 09 Mar 10
Wow, congrats! It’s huge. Love the windows. Look forward to attending a future SEED conference there. :)
Giancarlo Corzo 09 Mar 10
That is really nice place!.
But isn’t that office too big for 20 people that work from home most of the time?
Anonymous 09 Mar 10
I assume some of the walls aren’t in yet and it’s not all yours?
Unless you’re going to go on a spree hiring locals, in which case I’ll send my resume right over.
JF 09 Mar 10
Yes it is too big if you just think of it as a place for desks.
More on this in a future post.
Hashmalech 09 Mar 10
Does this “big space” has something to do with an eventual “37 signals class”?
Anonymous Coward 09 Mar 10
Hash, you mean 37signals University discussed back in 2009?
amh 09 Mar 10
Received Rework this afternoon… Just finished the chapter “go to sleep” so I think I will
Can’t wait to see “your estimates suck” because I know mine do… excellent read so far.
oh and pretty offices, can I come squat?
Sanat Gersappa 09 Mar 10
Neat. Love the graffiti :-)

This is completely pre-construction. Everything will be demoed (except the columns, of course).
Michael 09 Mar 10
Make sure you wall off the room for the Ping Pong table. The sound of the bouncing balls and people screaming at each other is rather distracting.

Love all the huge windows and natural light… looking forward to your post about the space.
Jeremy Ricketts 09 Mar 10
I suspect some of this space will be used for teaching and broadcasting. Eh? Eh? Am I close?

This reminds me of the space that Tom Hanks bought in Big. I hope to see a video of you guys jumping on a trampoline in there sometime soon.

The space looks amazing! I wouldn’t demo a thing; I’d keep it just the way it is. ;)
