The Getting Real translation project is making progress. Recently completed: Japanese and Russian versions (Russian shown below). There are also complete (or nearly complete) translations in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Other languages are in progress. If you’d like to help, get in touch. Just curious: if the english version was soooo profitable, why don’t you just give the work of translation to the many translation companies around the world (since you can afford to pay for it)? This way it would be ensured that the “quality of the message” is correctly translated to other languages as well. Why not let the professionals do the job?

From my humble knowledge of other languages I can tell you that the actual Getting Real translations that I’ve checked are far far away from the english original.

omniglot, you’re right. Russian is my primary language, yet some chapters of the translated version are just plain hard to understand due to a complex vocabulary or a word-for-word translation (which often is barely the best approach).

I haven’t had a trouble with the English version.

omniglot and Andrey… Maybe instead of complaining about the quality you can help make it better.

37signals isn’t selling the translated versions. They are all available free on the web.

Just a tip: the Portuguese version is done with the Brazilian Portuguese, which is different from the Portuguese from Portugal (specially in technology related texts). You should signal that and furthermore allow for a version of Portugal’s Portuguese (even if you don’t have one… yet).

Holy crap! The Russian “translation” is simply terrible.

To get the taste of it, try reading the Google translation of that Russian translation. Only imagine you did it recursively 100 times. :)

Can’t you pay a professional translator for professional quality translation work? Isn’t the public face of your organization important to you? I’m surprised that for all the concern with usability that you’d do things this way – risking that non English speakers are getting a misleading or difficult to understand set of guidelines. You wouldn’t let an ad hoc team of volunteers code your website, would you? Then why do this with translation? Post a gig on your board and hire a professional.
